I am still a relative newb with the Cub Cadets.... however I do know this. At $100.00 you got a great deal for a runner. Where else can you get that kind of value in a hobby project that will provide hundreds of hours of enjoyment for that price Post pics of your newest toy and have fun playing with it.

Re: My first Cadet
Jim,
Sounds like you got a good buy. What's the model number? Also, your buddy, did he buy a 782 Diesel? About 3 years ago, I bought my first cub cadet. Now I'm at six and counting. They are nice tractors and addicting.

Re: My first Cadet
A yellow and white 14 hp model that is suppose to have hood side panels would be a model 1450.

Re: My first Cadet
I have several CC's with the same key. But, yours may not be the same key. I've had to replace faulty swithes obtained from the autoparts store - has different keys.jim turner wrote:I didn't get the ignition key are they the same in all Cadets or will I have to buy a whole new switch? NAPA or Prime Line part number for the key: 7-01862. May or may not work. I think I paid 25 or 50 cents for the key at a small engine repair shop.

Re: My first Cadet
There are, as far as I know, two styles of keys. The early keys, up through the wide frame series (108,109,128,149, etc.) were the same, much heavier and better made than the later keys, and altogether different from the later keys. These tractors all used starter generators. Starting with the Quietline series, the keys are the flat generic things that tend to fall out easily after they get some wear on 'em. These tractors mark the entry of the ring gear starters, and I believe the switches have a different number of connectors to accommodate the changes in wiring, which probably explains the change in the keys as well. Don't recall right off hand which switch has the greater number of connectors, but I do know they are different, and a switch from a early tractor will not work in a later one unless other aspects of the tractor wiring are changed as well.
Both styles of key are still available, although I think you have to go to either a Cub Cadet dealer or an IH dealer to get the earlier style, whereas the later style is available at pretty much any place that sells lawn mower parts - TSC, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.

CC 70, CC 100, CC 106, CC 128, CC 149, CC 169, CC 1000, CC 1450, CC 782 (2 of 'em, one early, one late), CC 982, CC 1782, Cadet 76, IH 184, IH 684, IH 3311, IH 3314, Case 222, Case 446, various Lawnboys and one old Snapper. Not all of 'em run...

Re: My first Cadet
Well I goter home today it is still on my trailer I can't find the release for the hydrostat and I'm afraid to roll it off the trailer there is caution signs not to push it very far as it might damage the hydro, so now what?

Re: My first Cadet
Jim,
How did you get it on the trailer? If the tractor has not been run for awhile the pressure should have bled off and it can be pushed a short distance. You never want to tow a non running hydro, only push it at a slow walk, and only a short distance.
If the tractor has manual release valves in it, there is a lever on the right side of the tunnel cover in front of the seat. Pull up on that lever, and a paddle on that lever pushes down on the release buttons on the valves........provided the spring paddle that pushes on the valves is not broken off (common problem). Later models of the tractor had automatic release valves that would dump the pressure, and there is nothing for you to do and there is no lever.
Just for info, never park a hydro on any kind of slope/grade/hill without setting the brake, or you may end up chasing it down the hill. They will roll off when the pressure releases.

We set it on the trailer with a big tractor bucket and chains, but I will look for the release lever again Thanks Paul.

Re: My first Cadet
As it turns out my first Cadet is a sad investment, tried to start it today got fire, fuel etc. but I pulled the spark plug and something is floating around in the hole looks like it might be a face off of a valve upsidedown I moved it around but it is to large to come out through the plug hole, so what to do now I'm almost sure the engine will need a rebuild, but what if the tranny isn't any good either?
