how do you repair a seized engine

any idea where to buy a flywheel pulley that will work on the K301A? I tried a steering wheel pully, but the screw didn't have apoint so it kept flying off. I checked on line, but there didn't seem to be any that were readily identifiable. I am going to call Carter and Gruenwald tomorrow.

You can strike it from the sides to shock it off the taper too.




If you can't get it off bring it up to me and we'll pop it off. BigBill

Pulley or puller?

Put the nut back on the crank shaft so that the threads take up the nut. Something to pry the flywheel outward - you are putting a bit of pressure outward. Board on nut, wack board/nut with hammer.

Most of the gear pullers have a slight taper on the end to keep them from sliding. If the only thing preventing you from using your steering wheel puller is the taper - grinder.

You auto parts store will have a large selection of gear pullers.

sorry, puller, you are correct. That sounds like good advice. I will give it a try after I hit Auto Zone tonight. I will report back tomorrow. After I get the flywheel off, I need to figure out how to get the crank shaft and the gears out. Thank God for the service manual. This is fun though. I can't believe I have gotten this far since I usually have so little luck with machines, although not for want of trying.

so, the hole for the puller screw on one side of the flywheel is stripped. I will try tapping it and then jury rig a different type of pulling mechanism with some straps before I look at the flywheel as though it were a nail.

well, I tried pressing it out with the hydraulic press and some juryrigged rachet straps, but that didn't work. i tried prying it off with two wrecking bars and no movement. I will try to retap the screw hole for the puller attachment, but I think that will likely strip again. I tried pretending it was a nail, but that didn't seem to make a difference either.

Since you are planning on taking the block to the machine shop for work and are having a problem removing the flywheel - take the entire engine to the machine shop.

With the shroud removed and nut loose - the machinest will pop the flywheel off in no time. Less time in labor than to purchase a puller. 2 minutes. 10 minutes if he has to drill and tap the bolt holes.

i was thinking about that as well. The block has to be bare so i would then have to pop out the crankshaft and gears as well and I haven't advanced to that step. I just found a 10 inch hydraulic puller at harbor freight for 50 bucks so i ordered that. That should do the trick. I am as thick headed as that block when i get determined. I can always use these pullers for the next engine rebuild. Like I said, thick.

Thanks for the Kohler Engine manual. I was doing everything they said in there for the flywheel, but the rest of the info on the gears and crankshaft will be helpful.
