K301= 12 hp engine
A= Special oil pan (for a Cub Cadet)
S= Electric start. Can be starter/generator or a bendix type starter as used in a Cub Cadet 1200/1250 etc.

"AS" means S= starter/generator right??
"AQS" means Q= geared starter??

I'm not too sure about the A and what it means but i think my john deer 14hp kolher is an AQS engine too.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

The "A" means Special oil pan
The "Q" means Quiet Model
The "S" means Electric start. Make's no difference if it is a geared starter or a starter generator.

You can find these and other identification letters and numbers listed on page 1.3 of the Kohler "K" series engine service manual, or in about any publication that list Kohler Engine Identification Numbers.
