Disc brake pad replacement

Postby BigBill » Mon Oct 11, 2010 10:49 am

We took the warn disc brake pads off of my 70 cub cadet. I tried the green colored (solid green color, "smooth") lining and its work ok but i can see it compressing when the brake is applied. I do have brakes but i'm sure i can't stop the trailer with over 1/4 cord of fire wood in it. I guess I need to install an axle in the new trailer with electric brakes for safety. Next ill bond the mcmaster carr "green gripper" on to my disc brake pads and try that, the material is much harder and in the test lab this green gripper preformed the best at stopping 18,000ft lbs. on the dyne with two mechanical calipers. I know i need to give the plain green lining to wear in across the new pads plus the discs have to clean up also. It may improve to be much better in time. I'd like to use up the lesser grade lining on the mowers. The glue we used for the disc brake bonding worked awesome too it bonded in 30 seconds. I contacted the company and they suggested two of there products one for smooth material and another for coarse material. I wire wheeled off the old brake material and we glued the new brake material on to the steel backing. I was going to rivet it too but i wanted to test it with no rivets first. Bill

Now my thoughts are when i add disc brakes to a cadet with the wet brake maybe i should reline the wet brake and use both the disc and wet brake to improve the braking/stopping power.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Bill, what was the glue you used for the disc brake bonding? I haven't used any that bonds that quick and am interested. Thanks Grump

I went insearch of looking for a glue or a epoxy to bond brake lining. I talked with a few companies and i came up with one company who i purchased two different types of glue/fast epoxy. It works very quick and don't get it on your hands. I figured i would need the brass rivets besides the bonding but the bonding is holding up now since i don't it.

Its from;

Cat# HST-8T Special T ultra gap filling (smooth linings) smooth surface

I been doing a heat test too and its holding up also. We been hauling firewood in my trailer (1/3rd cord) and using the brakes to slow it down. I'm testing the softer linings right now but i think we will move up to the green gripper linings next from mcmaster carr there more coarse and much harder. The green gripper linings performed the best on the dyne with stopping power.

I have smooth and coarse linings. I may try the fcub/154 linings next if i can bend the linings which i think i can.

BigBill, Would this adhesive work on Cub brake bands, or would the rivets still be needed?

Bob; Right now its on the flat disc brake pads and holding up to heat and weather very well so far. Its been a month now. I also plan on using it on my fcub and my int154's but its so much work to change out the brake bands i may add a few brass rivets too so i'm sure it will hold to besafe and save extra work if it fails. Its the recommended glue for brake linings.

To bond "homemade" brake pads for Cub Cadet's, I have used "Liquid Nail's' brand construction adhesive. It works, and is less expensive.

There's holes in the disc brake backing steel pads so when you clean off the old brake material you clean out these holes too. When gluing or bonding the new brake material to the steel backingt plates i put some glue in these holes too just the way its done orginally. This puts the holes in shear with the new lining so the shear forces if there is any is eliminated too. I'm sure any good glue that can take the outdoors(wet) and heat will work. I just went with what the pro's use.

Hey grump maybe we can get together at the next Cecil fest and do your brake pads then. I may have some extra lining for the cadets you can have and use. I'd like to test different brake linings too.

I appreciate the offer but its a little too far for me. Medical problems in the family usually keep me close to home. Family comes first for me. Things are lookin better with time so...maybe one of these days. Thanks. Grump

Sorry i missed this by not being here that often. I have cutoff's and scraps of brake material from the elevator disc brake developement we did on the dynamometer we set up for brake testing on the new disc brakes. I have a few different linings. The green gripper was the best at stopping the most torque/rpm's. We need a hard lining not a soft compressable lining. I'm using a light green lining and its ok but its soft. I have a black colored lining to try next. I need to check the duromiter(softness or hardness under compression). I'm sure the green gripper is the best at stopping is what i have also. I have noticed there are different grades of linings used on the cadets. It seems to me they are different on each disc brake setup that i have.

I think a;ll my brake linings are from mcmaster carr.

I used S-10 riveted front disc pads. Do not forget to use your dust mask, you may need to trim pad to fit. I used 2 part epoxy, that was 2 years ago, still holding.I forget what year model S-10, maybe mid 90's.
