Exhaust Mounting Question on a Cub Cadet 124

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Sun Nov 28, 2010 1:41 am

I have a 1968 Narrow Frame 124 that I am trying to stop a rattleing noise in the front of the engine. I just noticed today that the muffler is loose and that is what is causeing the rattling. Look at the picture and you will see that there is a welded nut/bracket that isn't connected to anything. By it not being connected, the muffler basically moves up and down freely causing the rattle. My question is: where does the bracket attach? Are there any missing pieces?? Thanks for all of your help.

You're missing a plate that mounts to the head that supports the muffler.

This is on my 125 which is the hydro model of your gear drive 124

Just saw your post Jeff. THank you soo much for the help and the picture. I see exactly what is missing now. Does that affect the engine at all with this plate missing?? Do you think it affects the torque of the head bolts?? Thanks so much. I really need to find one at a reasonable price so I can get it mounted on there correctly!!

If the head/block has the correct studs in the correct places, then no, installing the plate will not affect the head or head gasket. The picture of Jeff's has the correct plate, but NOT the correct head bolts. On a correct assembly, there is a combination of bolts and studs with nuts holding the head on the block. Studs are used so that the head nuts and bolts can be installed and torqued correctly. Then spacers are placed on the studs, then the plate, and another nut is installed on the studs to hold down the plate. This way the plate can be taken on/off without affecting the torque on the the head bolts. I would not recommend installing bolts through the plate to hold the head in place.

I three K301 engines for 125 Cub Cadets and none have the studs you speak of. All three have 3 (or is it 4?) bolts that torque down on the heat shield.
Freedom is for those that claim it.

This plate is also a baffle that keeps the heat away from the gas tank. It directs the flow of hot air out passed the muffler and out the front of the tractor. The less heat the gas tank sees the better, besides supporting the muffler.

These can be found on ebay, joes power offers them most of the time.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Here's a tracing of one with dimensions ( the picture is HUGE )
Image

It's .080 steel plate/sheetmetal, you'll need a piece 8" x 10-14". two holes are 7/16", two 15/16" and the slot for the muffler is 13/32 x 13/16

The right side top corner is cut 1" on each side for form a 45* angle. The edge at the bottom of the picture is bend down about 7/8"
