Can anyone tell me how many 982's (gas and diesel) were produced?
Was the Diesel engine an Onan twin.

The 982 was never offered in a diesel. I believe the diesel version was the Model 1512, which was a 15-hp diesel super garden tractor. Then they went to the 1872 which was a gas Kubota 3-cylinder water cooled model. and later the 2082 and 2182 which were both gas, one Kohler, and one Kubota gas. I'm pretty sure those numbers are all correct, but I don't have my reference in front of me at the moment.

I believe the 1512 diesel was a garden tractor, not a super like the 982. The 1572 diesel was a super GT along with the 1772 diesel. The 1872 had a 2 cylinder 18 horse kohler motor and the 2072 had a 2 cylinder 20 horse kohler motor. I, too don't know the actual production numbers of the 982. They are nice tractors. I've got one sitting in my shed and love it.

Ok, now I have my reference material. There is no real listing of how many 982s were built, nor is there a listing of any true production numbers for any of the later built Cub Cadet tractors. They all used sequential serial numbers, so it is nearly impossible to know how many of each model was built.

IH built the 982 Super Garden Tractor (SGT) from 1979 to 1981 and they were all painted red.
Then in 1981 IH sold out to Cub Cadet Corporation (MTD).
CCC continued building the 982 from 1981 to 1985 as both all red tractors and yellow/white tractors. In addition to the 982, they offered a 984 (yellow and white only with rear PTO and 3-point hitch), and 986 (same as the 984 only it added front hydraulic outlets). All of these tractors were the 19-hp Onan engine.

1985 - 1986 - 1912 SGT - 19.9 hp Onan gas engine
1985 - 1986 - 1914 SGT - Same as the 1912 but with Cat 0 3-point hitch
1988 - 1572 SGT - the first with a diesel 15-hp Kubota 3-cylinder liquid cooled engine (this is the one I thought above was the 1512, but that was the replacement for the 782D)
1989 - 1772 SGT - 17-hp Kubota 3-cylinder liquid cooled diesel engine
1988 - 1989 - 1872 SGT - 18-hp Kohler gas engine
1987 - 1989 - 2072 SGT - 19.9hp Onan gas engine
1990 - 1996 - 1782 SGT - 17-hp Kubota 3-cylinder liquid cooled diesel engine
1990 - 1991 - 1882 SGT - 18-hp Kohler gas engine
1990 - 1992 - 2082 SGT - 20-hp Kohler gas engine
1990 - 1995 - 2182 SGT - 21-hp Kubota liquid cooled gas engine
1993 - 1994 - 2084 SGT - 20-hp Kohler gas engine
1995 - 1997 - 2284 SGT - 22-hp Kohler gas engine
1996 - 1997 - 2086 SGT - 20-hp Kawasaki liquid cooled gas engine

That's the end of the "super garden tractors". Technically, in 1998 when Cub Cadet released the 3000 series garden tractors, they were built to the approximate size/dimensions of the SGTs, but they used smaller wheels/tires. Most of the design of the 3000 series garden tractors, like the 2000 series, was to facilitate ease of getting on/off of the tractor, which is why they went with lower stance.

Hope this helps.
