Re: new to forum with 582???Welcome aboard Brian.
There area a great bunch of people here to help you out. The creeper is used when tilling and snowblowing. It has other uses also. As far as mowing it should be a good mower for your yard. These are strong little tractors. The worth is what someone is willing to pay for it in the condition it is in. I bought one for $125 but it was not running when it was bought. Cleaned the gas tank and carb and it has been running since. It has the B&S 16hp motor. However, I went a little different direction with mine. It goes to tractor shows now and I get a good jaw work out with it. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=43028&p=355907&hilit=Brutus#p355907 JimT
If you can't find it, don't lose it.
Re: new to forum with 582???Is it a 582 or a 582 Special? A 582 has a 3 speed trans axle (same basic transmission as a Farmall Cub) and the creeper is a separate gear box with it's own short shift lever. A 582 Special has a 4 speed, belt driven, Peerless transaxle (shaft driven from the engine to a right angle gearbox and then belt driven to the transmission) with a single shift lever, and 1st gear marked as a creeper gear. It is to the right of, and in line with, 2nd gear position of the shift lever. The 582 can be a good mower, the 582 Special would depend on how much ground you are mowing and how the ground lays (flat, hilly, ect.). Both use the same 16 HP B&S 2 cylinder opposed engine, with the 582 considered the better of the two models.
