Are the rear end and transmission the same in the model 100 and 122?

Looking at the parts manual they both have wet brakes so I would suspect they are interchangeable. But others will chim in about it also.

Yep, they're the same.

Just for info purposes, all the IH built Cub Cadet gear drive transmissions (except for the Original, and models 1100, 482 and 582 Special and the Cadet Lawn tractor models) are a bolt in interchange as long as you stay with the same brake type, that is internal brake trans with internal brake trans, disc brake with disc brake etc. The shift lever may be a different shape and length (because of the different fender pans) but they will interchange also. The internal and external disc brakes can be changed, but that can be a bit more complicated because there are some internal differences, the bottom transmission or pinion shaft for one, that will require disassembly of the transmission (the internal brake disc mounts on the front of this shaft and the shaft is different than the disc brake model). Some of the late Quietline models and the 82 series had aluminum axle housings, but will still interchange. The hydros will also interchange, again, as long as you stay with the same brake type.

I thought there was a differance in the gear ratios. If I remember 2nd gear in the 100 had a slower ground speed.

There were 3 different 2nd gear ratios used in the Cub Cadets, but they really don't alter the fact that the transmissions from one model will bolt into another model. The 3 different 2nd gear's are interchangeable as long as you change both the sliding gear and the fixed gear as a set (52 total teeth between the two gears). The Original thru 70/100 serial number 96765 had a 16 tooth sliding gear, 36 tooth fixed gear. From that S/N to the wide frame models a 19/33 tooth gear set was used, and the wide frames and later (86,108, 128, 800, 1000, 1200, 582), a 17/35 tooth set was used. The other gear ratios are the same in all models.
