Take it to an old time starter/generator repair/rebuild shop. Most areas should have one. I got my starter/generator rebuilt at my local AC Delco Service Center. Price was good and affordable and the work was top notch.

Local automotive electric motor repair shop is probably your best bet. Price, unknown. Last starter that I had a shop repair cost me $60-, but that was years ago.

Suggest disassembling (make a sketch of the internal wiring). Find out what is the problem(s). It may not be an expensive repair because brushes, bearing and bushing, can be obtained from your local auto parts store. Field windings can also be purchased.

Local library, reference section, look up starter or generator repairs.

Question or a statement: Battery condition, solenoid, regulator, faults show up as a non functional starter/generator.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I had a couple I needed to get done but the price was really reasonable - Generator and Cut-Out and I am really quite happy with it. Lot cheaper than a new one or even a good used one.

Yea, look around for an automotive electrical shop, or armature shop. I've had several rebilt, typically $75 to do them. The parts will almost cost you that much if you try to do it yourself, but if you screw it up, you're still out the money. Every town has a couple of automotive electrical shops. If you cannot find in the yellow pages, ask at an old time car repair shop, where they have starters rebuilt. Someone will know.

I did a quick Google Search for starter generator rebuild shops in orlando florida and there are a few that look promising and I would check them out:

Hutcherson Alternators & Starters

Moonlight Starter Generator

Strickland Starter & Generator Shop

I am sure you will be able to get your starter/generator repair locally.

On the S/g's i do my own as well as any other starter/ alternator/ generator work. There is a rebuild kit offered on ebay with the brushes and bearings. You can have the armature turned at a local auto machine or genny shop and rebuild it yourself. You need to remove the pulley first and remove the woodruff key then the front housing will seperate from the armature. Its all easy after that.

Thomas:

If you are going to go down this road, then some research and studying is in order. I would suggest that you spend a little time in these manuals:

GSS-1052-C Testing and Servicing Electrical Equipment

GSS-1013 - Electrical

GSS-1012 - Electrical

They are not specific to Starter Generators but I believe that they are a good starting place. Enjoy the journey. There are some real good electrical guru's on the forum who can be a real help to you as the rebuild process progresses.

Good luck :D

"Just because you hear hoofbeats don't assume it's zebras." Your starter may not need a total rebuild. Last one (on a Super A) I had worked on just needed a good cleaning and servicing. Bill was less than $50.

If we take it apart we might as well install a new set of brushes and two new ball bearings p-lus clean the armature then he can forget about it ever giving him a problem again. Plus everytime i band aid something it seems to bite me again in the end so i end up doing it twice. This is why i go thru it once and forget about it.
