Roto-tiller RPM's

Postby Bob Perry » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:37 am

Does anybody know about what RPM's a Cub Cadet roto-tiller runs at? I am mounting a gas engine on mine, to tow with an old Cub Cadet.

(I have no problem doing the math to figure out the pulley sizes to reduce it from engine RPM's.) I have a good collection of pulleys, pillow blocks, shaft stock, etc.

I guess we stumped the crowd on this one. I'll probably shoot for 300 / minute.

When you do the math, don't forget the right angle gear box is not 1 to 1. The bevel gear on the input shaft is a 20 tooth gear, and the gear on the output shaft is a 30 tooth gear. I don't have a manual on any of the tillers, but I don't think I have ever seen or heard what the rpm might be.

Just did a web search on tiller tine rpms. Surprised at the number of different tine rpms.

Do a web search for Cub Cadet tiller tine rpms. Number of hits.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Bob, I know this is way after the fact since you first posted this back in August but I felt I need to relay my story here. A few years ago I attempted to run a roto-tiller off the back of my F Cub using the Cubs pto. I used a reguar pto drive shaft connected to a right angle drive unit on the tiller, I do not recommend that, actually kind of scary! As you know the pto shaft runs at engine speed so the tiller was running roughly 500 to 600 rpm through the speed reduction on the tiller. My problems were twofold. 1) the tiller ran way too fast! It was throwing rocks and chunks of dirt 20 to 30 feet  . I could have slowed it down mechanically but... problem 2) even in 1st gear the Cub goes too fast to dig really well, even when I throttled back, pretty much the same reason the big Cubs aren't running snow plowers without auxillary power or gear reduction. How did your project work out?

I did good. Since I posted that, I came across a 104 with a creeper gear, and it does excellent. When I posted it, I was thinking about dedicating a gas engine to the tiller, but I learned that the 104 certainly has enough power to run the tiller.

Coincidentally, at the end of the season, my creeper gearbox started jumping out of high, and I in fact plan to take a look at it on Saturday, during the mini-Fest we're having here.

When a Cub is used to till, they use gear-reducers off the final drives. But at this time, the CC 104 is perfect for what we need it for.

The gear box turns counter clockwise at 1800 rpm . The gear box can also be used as a power take off , which can be mounted in two different ways. I'm not sure yet how fast the tines turn, if that is what you were asking. I have a nice #1 IH tiller with both extensions, and with about 70% tine life left yet.

Operator's Manual Setting Up Instructions International Tiller #1 can be down loaded for free at http://www.cubcadetcollectors.com .

Probably don't need this information now, but I found your answer.
The tines of a model 15 tiller (while connected to a 184) turn at 200 RPM's.

Do you have the rest of this ad for the 184? Could I get a copy of it if you do?

Why not run it off the cadet power? My rear tiller on my cadet 100 works awesome.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
