Farmall Cub

I have an old yellow cub (a 1960 something model I think) and the governor is malfunctioning. The motor is surging. Anybody have any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it?

The most common cause of surging is carb adjustment. Not to say worn Gov linkage won't scause it as well as some other Gov problems.
Us old giezers believe in the KISS principle. I have to use it all the time from keeping me from looking for some esoteric once in a million cause. Keep it Simple Stupid. Not that you are stupid but I sure am.

Move the spring down one hole in the govenor arm bracket. If this reduces the surge, move down one more hole until it stops.

Try rebuilding your carburetor (if you haven't done so already). It's a simple procedure and not very mechanically involved . Especially, if your carb. is leaking (even slightly), air from old, worn out gaskets, can be your cause. After rebuilding and re-installing...reset your carb's mixture and idle adjustment screws until it operates smooothly in idle and high speed .

Moving the spring to a different hole may help with the surging, but it is not fixing the problem. Unless the govenor setting has been changed, the surging is caused by a lack of fuel most likely, either from a clogged fuel line/strainer, dirt in the fuel tank, or dirt/rust in the carburetor. Solve that the dirt/rust problem, and it will probably fix the problem. Clean the carb in a good carburetor cleaner, blow it out with compressed air, and make sure all the teenie weenie holes in the needle valve are clear.
