The 1983 CCC 782 (serial #715729) I bought last year would steer tighter to the left than the right and seemed to drift when trying to mow in a straight line. Decided to overhaul and upgrade the steering. Found a couple internet articles on rebuilding/upgrading the steering box:
http://cubfaq.com/steeringrebuild.html
and
http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/steering.htm
Not liking to pay shipping, I found the thrust bearing locally (equivalent to a Nice #605, $1.95), a 5/8"-18 jam nut with nylon insert (Feldman's Farm & Home, $0.95) and a washer (same store, $0.40). So, for $3.30 and a little grease, I've got as close to power steering as you can get. Adjusted the tie rods and tow end. Now she turns equally tight in either direction--with one finger!!

Good information on part numbers. Been a while since I rebuilt a Ross steering for a Cub Cadet, but I think the Case/IH kit was in the $26- range.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Recent search on e*ay was a Buy-It-Now at $19 (one bearing, one jam nut and one washer). Think I got that whipped...
