CC 1650 - K Series Kohler - Governor Gear? Pics Added

Postby gitractorman » Mon Jul 01, 2013 8:10 am

Anyone have any experience replacing the governor gear on a K-series engine? I've got a beautiful Cub Cadet 1650 that I just realized the governor gear is off. The engine actually starts and runs pretty great considering there's no governor, so when I've started it I've only kept it at ilde.

Anyway, I was hoping to pull the engine and open the oil pan, fish the gear out and put a new one in, however, in the engine manual, it shows taking out the camshaft to get to the governor gear. I just wondered if anyone has had luck installing one without taking the camshaft out.

Thanks,
Bill

Yes, the camshaft has to come out. Sorry no other way to do it.

David,
Yea, I've been real close to pulling the engine a few times now, but it's boating season here in Buffalo (you know, we only have 1 month of summer here) so I've been a little busy on the water. Right now, unless we get a really rainy weekend, it's going to have to sit until winter. It's too bad, because it is a really nice tractor, nice paint, and all complete, and will actually start and run at idle, but as soon as you touch the throttle, it goes past wide open throttle. The good thing is I know the engine is good, and runs good, so I guess it's worth waiting until I have time to tear it down.

Thanks,
Bill

Hello Bill can you put a pic on of the 1650.
I think the 982 must need a carb tuneup because it floods so easily and other times you have to hand choke it with the breather off, to get it started.
I got an Onan air filter from the local IH dealer yesterday and it cost over $50.

Ouch. Auto parts stores carry air filters for Onan engines.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Red,
Yea, sounds like the float is sticking in the carb. I've had good luck spraying Sea Foam's Deep Creep product into the fuel line inlet right at the carb, and letting it sit 15 or 20 minutes, then hooking it up and running it. I've freed up a couple of carbs that were gummed up and floats were sticking. Actually, I think that it blows the crud out of the needle valve seat, which is why gas keeps running into the carb.

I'm in Syracuse today, but I'll try to get a pic of the 1650 and post it tonight.

Later,
Bill

Red,
As requested, here are a couple of pics. As you can see, she's a nice tractor. It had electrical issues, so I had the starter rebuilt, and installed a new PTO switch and key switch. That fixed everything, and she fired right up. After running a few seconds, I throttled up and she went wide open throttle. I had the side covers off and the hood up, so I grabbed the governor arm and held her back. Fiddled around a bit, re-adjusted the governor linkage per the Kohler manual, and started it back up. It was much better, but still had no governor control. I've got a DeWalt scope camera, and was able to look in the engine through the cam gear cover, and found the governor gear laying on the cam shaft. Must have just fallen off the shaft. Anyway, It will have to wait till winter now.
