Thanks Guys,

I will be seeking out a manual. The 582 special was built by International before the MTD buy out, right? I think that I have determined that this little Tractor was built in 1980 or 81. MTD took over in 1985, I think.

I'm sure that you fellas can help me with information on my PTO switch. First of all, would I be correct that this switch was used on mant different Cadets? It engages easily when you pull it out and flip it up. The problem is that it is very hard to disengage. I am not sure if this indicates that the switch is bad or if there is another issue with the electric clutch on the PTO. Has anyone experianced this?

IH sold the Cub Cadet line in 1981 (June is the month usually given) to Cub Cadet Corp which was/is owned by MTD. The last 582S IH built is S/N 694101, and was built in April 1981. In fact, April 81 is the last month IH built any Cub Cadets according to the Louisville Monthly Production Records for the Cub Cadet line.

There could be a couple of things wrong with the PTO switch. Power to it also goes through the safety switch's and if they are bad it can cause PTO problems.

Paul,

You are a wealth of information and I apreciate you taking the time to share all of this with me.
The PTO switch is out and I have determined that it is the switch its self that is the problem. I will get a new one and I should be back in business.

I'm going to check my serial number tomorrow. Everything indicates that this machine was built by Internatonal. I read that the 582s were built between June of 1980 and April of 1981.

Get the S/N and if IH built it, I can tell you when, or you can just go to this site http://ihregistry.com/ref/paulbell.htm and look it up for your self.

Paul,

I went to the site that you recommended and as near as I can determine my machine was built in 1981. My serial # 2050596U690513.

Here is another question for the forum, the rear wheel rims are reversable for either a wide or narrow stance, would wide or narrow be most ideal for mowing? It is currently in the wide stance.

If you mow on a hillside, wide will make it more stable, but if on flat ground, narrow will make cutting around cornere easier if theat doesn't create a problem with clearance of the deck.

It was built the last day of production in Feb 81 (only 11 more built in Feb)
The numbers you listed break down as follow's:
205 says it is a Cub Cadet
0596 is the 'Kind Code" and means 582S
U means it was built in the USA
The last 6 digits are the serial number.
The earlier Cub Cadet do not have anything but the serial number.

Actually, unless someone has changed the wheels and tires, the wheel are not really reversible. The valve stem goes to the outside on Cub Cadets, and you will probably find that if you try to turn them around, that the deep offset will cause the tire/wheel to hit the inside of the fender, or the brake on the left side, before you can bolt them up. Now if it has wheels with the valve inside and the deep offset on the outside, the wheels are from another brand of tractor like JD . It should have 23-10.50-12 rear tires on it.

Thanks John and Paul. I had the rear tires off and they looked reversable, so I thought that there was a wide stance and a narrow, like the CUB. I'm sure now that I'm wrong.

So Paul, did I understand correctly that this Cadet was built on the last day of IH production before MTD took over? If that is so, wow!

I think he said the last production of February. More were built in March and April before IH shut it down.

Jim is correct.

It was built on the last day of production for the month of Feb, 81. The first serial number used for the month of March, 81, was 690524, 11 tractors after yours.

S/N 694101 was the last 582S built by IH, and was built in April 81.

582 Special, sharpening the mower blades

Thanks! Does the fact that the Tractor was so close to the end of production at IH add value down the road?

What technique do you Fellas use for sharpening mower blades? Do you use a hand held grinder? How sharp do you make the blades?

Dan:

I use a 6" Bench Grinder and my father-in-law uses an 8" Bench Grinder. The 6 is okay, the 8 is much better What is even better than that is the old wet stones that you cranked by hand - now those put a proper edge on mower knives, axes, chisels - you name it.

I have not tried my angle grinder to sharpen mower knives.

I quit using my bench grinder when I got my angle grindet about 6 or 7 years ago. The sharper they are, the better they will cut, howeveer, if you get too fine an edge it dulls easier. as a side note, after about 10 minutes of mowing youe would be amazed how much of the edge is taken off.

I doubt that being close to the end of IH production will add any value. If it was the last one of any model it might jack up the value a little, but only to a collector. The 582S is not high on the list of desired, or 'gotta have' models, as far as collectors are concerned.
