Red Cadet 682

Can I assume a 682 International has a 15hp Onan?

No, the 682 and 782 tractors both had KT-17 engines, 17-hp Kohler Magnums. Unfortunately, they were the Series I engine, without pressure lubrication, and are quite prone to becoming KT-8.5 engines. I have an extremely nice original 682 with a KT-17 Series II engine, that's like brand new, which I've been working on this winter. Excellent machine! Also, depending on the year of the one you're looking at, it could have been built by International Harvester (like mine), or could have been a later model built by Cub Cadet Corporation (MTD). The easiest way to spot the original IH built ones is the cast iron rear end, and the IH logos/and serial number plate. The MTD built machines have black painted rear ends which are cast aluminum, and the serial number plate says Cub Cadet on it, not International Harvester.

Here is a picture of mine, which is an early, IH built 682

Also, the later ones built by MTD were made in both red/black (like mine above), or yellow/white like this one:

Cub Cadets 682, 1811, 1864, Simplicity Legacy XL 4x4 Diesel with FEL, 60" mower, 50" Tiller

Possible that the PO replaced the former Kohler KT17 with an Onan...

In addition to what gitractorman said above, in the first couple years MTD (aka, CCC) was using up the remaining parts stockpile when the acquisition took place from IH. Therefore, many of the earliest Cadets, like my 782, has a cast iron rear axle. But it was painted black instead of IH red. Mine was produced in 1983.

Post some pics if you get a chance.
