108 Mower Belt Question~another question
My 1971 model 108 has a 44" mower deck. I need an new drive belt. The 78" belt I just bought seems way too short. What length should it be?

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
Well then I really am confused. The 78" belt I tried to put on looks about 2" too short. Your chart says 80" for a 48" deck. How do you determined the size of the deck? I have 48" worth of sheet metal. Do I have a 48" deck?

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
I believe the deck size is measured from the two outer tips of the blades.
Good luck,
Good luck,

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
Have you loosened the mule drive/idler pulleys?
Tried installing the belt with the mower deck elevated at it's highest level?
Did you take the old belt to the auto parts store as an example? Read the numbers printed on the old belt?
Just thinking out loud.
You might be able to return the 78" belt and get an 80" belt.

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
There should be an ID plate on the deck. But be sure and loosen the mule drive /idler pulleys as Eugene has stated and then readjust them when you get the belt on. Is also 3/8 belt and not 1/2 inch.

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
I did loosen the mule drive idler pulleys and raise the deck. The old belt was in shreads and not useful for measuring. I tried measuring the length with a string but the string was too stretchy and I could make it stretch from anywhere between 78 and 80. The chart above says 1/2". I've never seen an ID plate on the mower.

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
Measure the length of the new belt - - or compare the two belts, side by side. Even stretched there shouldn't be much difference in lengths.

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
I actually did measure the new belt to see if it was maybe mislabled. It is 78". What's left of the old belt is 80 1/2". I just ordered a new 80" belt so we'll see.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: 108 Mower Belt Question
Well, I managed to get an 80" belt on it. I had a difficult time getting it on until I thought to move the horizontal bar at the front of the mule to it's other position. Now I can't remember which position the rod is supposed to stay in all the time, up or down?

This is way after the fact, but that's an interesting comment. The thin (5/16"?) bar is to release and/or hold the mule drive bracket in position. There should be another heavier bar in the frame that it clamps onto. In your pic it appears to be down and if the mule drive is in the right position (all the way back and up) it should be holding it in. Pulling it up releases it.
FWIW I've been using 1/2" A series belts on my Cub decks for years with great success.

If you don't have an Owner's Manual for your deck, there's several places online, like this one: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4683
As far as going by the book, I'm more pragmatic. If your particular mowing deck calls for a 78" belt, but it really takes an 80", then if it were me, I'd be using what works and not worrying about it. Wishing you success!
