682 kt17 series 2 rebuild or swap???

Postby Chase_Cub22 » Sun Apr 24, 2016 8:12 pm

I just picked up a 682 this weekend to add to my collection this weekend. Paid $100 for it. The guy said it ran last year when he parked it but the battery was dead. So I figured for a $100 what the hell. Well I got it home drained the stale gas and put some fresh gas and stole a battery from one of my other tractors and with a little tinkering got it running. It was very low on power and kept shutting off and would backfire while trYing to start and when it shut off. I pulled the plugs and checked the compression and no compression on the number 2 cylinder. So my question is, is it worth rebuilding this KT17 series 2 motor or to repower? Not looking to dump a bunch of money into it but would love to get this thing going! I am very capable of rebuilding an engine just would like to know rough cost of a full rebuild and where to get the parts if you guys think it's worth it! Thanks in advance guys!

The KT-17 isn't a bad engine, but rebuilding it is a real Pain in the Arse! The block has to be split to access the crank shaft and connecting rods, so you have to split, re-build, then re-assemble with the correct sealant, otherwise the block will leak. It's not a simple, drop the oil pan and pull the heads, rebuild, and bolt her back together like the rest of the Kohler engines. Also, you have to watch when you open the block up, make sure that the connecting rod that broke did not dig into the block somewhere  .

So, having said that, if you take your time, and you know what you're doing, it can be rebuilt. You can get parts online, NAPA, just about anywhere you're comfortable with. Kohler has a rebuild kit, which is a nice one to get, and should have all the gaskets you need.

I'd guess you're going to spend around $500 to rebuild the engine by the time you buy the rebuild kit, get the cylinders honed, new pistons, etc.

I've seen a lot of good reviews from folks putting the 20 or 22hp Honda engines in the 682/782 tractors. Small Engine Warehouse has a really nice setup online, but you're going to spend about $1500 or more for it.

Honestly, I think I'd look for a later Cub Cadet with a Kohler V-block Magnum engine in it, and swap that into it. Look for a 1862/1863/1864, or a later 2000 or 3000 series tractor. All of those use the later Kohler engines and they are excellent power plants. The 2000 Series tractors are available pretty cheap so I'd be on the lookout for one of those. I can regularly find those tractors for $500 and that engine is way better than the KT-17 that came in the 682 originally.

I found a 19hp kohler courage engine for $350. Do I need anything extra to drop that in? I also found a kohler M18 for $400 ready to put in my 682. Which, in your opinion, would be a better am engine?

Is the Kohler Courage a horizontal shaft engine? Thought those where vertical shafts used in the modern Cadets; not built well.

The M18 has a good reputation for being a transplant into an '82 series. The Kohler Command engines are also good.

Have you removed the head on the problem cylinder and checked the head gasket? Your symptoms sound similar to my CC 1810 with a Kohler Magnum 18. Blown head gasket while mowing, low power and backfiring. Also make sure valves are opening and closing while head is off.

I did not check that yet. I did plan on at least tearing the motor apart before I spend any money. But I will be sure to check that out. Thanks for all the input guys!
