steering gear

The steering gear on my 102 needs a rebuild kit.But I can purchase a good one complete off a 127. Can anyone tell me if they are the same length and will the one off the 127 fit my 102.Thanks for your help. 8) :)

Hi Bruce: The tube and steering rod have different numbers so they must be different lengths. If the 127 is longer there won't be a problem but if it is shorter you hood will hit the steering wheel when you try to open it. My guess the 127 is shorter as it had the different steering wheel. It may work if you get the steering wheel off the 127. Paul B. knows the different lengths and can tell us if you can change tubes and rods.

Thanks for the reply. I thought there might be a difrence. I do not have a book on the 127,but the part # for a 108 and 102 are different as well. I will have to take a hours drive and pick it up and try it. Parts are hard to find in my area.Thanks again. 8) :) Bruce

The 127 assembly is too short (tube & shaft length) for your 102, although the steering box itself is the same. If you have a Cub Cadet dealer, you can rebuild yours fairly cheaply, at least you can state side. There is a bearing kit, P/N IH-71930-C91, that sells for about $7.00 US that included upper and lower bearings and races, the side plate seal and retainer is P/N IH-394936-R91 and is about the same price or less. The cam follower stud is a bit pricey, about $20.00 US, but you may be able to turn it 90 degrees (to an unworn spot) and still use it. If the 127 assembly is good, you can also just switch the shaft and tube with the one from your 102. The tube is a press fit.

If you don't have a Cub Cadet dealer, you may be able to get the parts through a Case IH dealer, or you can order from Scot Madson, at Madson's Service Inc., 114 S. 2nd Ave, St Nazianz, Wisconsin 54232, ph(920)773-2661. Scot is a Cub Cadet dealer and has new, used, and reproduction parts, and ships daily. He is very good to deal with.

I guess I will go and order the rebuild. I thought the 127 would be too short.I would have liked to use it,since it has a good steering wheel and centre. Which I do not have.Thanks for the reply. 8) :) Bruce

If you don't care about originality, you may be able to use the one from the 127. Take the one out of your 102, it has to come out either way, and compare it to the one from the 127. The tube length, from the top of the steering box to the top of the tube, on your 102 should be about 19-3/8". The tube length on the 127 is roughly 18-1/2" +-. Be sure you measure how much of the tube on your 102 sticks above the dash, so you can tell if the 127 tube is long enough to come through the dash. The steering wheel on the 127 is a dished wheel, so it should still provide room for the hood to open.

Since the 102 has no engine in it right now,I have a 12 hp to go in it.This would be the time to do it.You are right the steering wheel is dished on the 127. I am not concerned about original status.Besides I can always convert back later if I want. Thanks very much for your help. 8) :) Bruce
