Cub Cadet 122

Postby tinnerjohn » Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:36 pm

I have been offered a 122 and QA 36 Snow Blower, not sure what size deck is on the tractor, I haven't seen the tractor for a year or so, but its been in a yard barn for several years since the current owner got a zero turn. Its been started on a monthly basis and if I remember right, its in very good condition (I've known the owner for years, I know how he maintains his stuff, very anal!).
I'm just wondering if there are any weak points to these, the only other lawn tractor I've had experience with was a Simplicity Landlord, that mower deck had at least one spindle on the deck that took a half tube of grease, if you gave it the normal 3-4 pumps you were replacing bearings every year. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, John

The 122 was the part of the third generation Cub Cadets, the first being the Original, the second being the 70 and 100, and then the third, the 71, 102, 122, and 123 tractors. The 122 will have the 12 hp Kohler K-301 single cylinder engine and the 3 speed transmission. It's a narrow frame tractor, which is harder to work on than the wide frame tractors which came in a later generation. The 122 are tough machines and if you can get it for a decent price, go for it. I don't think you will regret it.

As for weak points, the narrow frames are more difficult to work on because of less room. It should have the old point system for the ignition, so those needed some attention periodically, i.e. readjusting or cleaning. Check the clutch, and also the pto clutch for wear and working condition. Maybe drain the transmission as water may have gotten in there.

The other guys here will probably add to the list and tell you more.

Where I'm from, that means he's giving it to you. In that case, accept and enjoy. If that doesn't mean "free", then just make sure he goes over everything with you, including the snow thrower, before you buy it. Check your local C*list for pricing so you know what range if fair. Either way, deck was one of 3 offered: 38", 42" or 48". See TractorData site here: http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractors/000/2/2/229-cub-cadet-122.html

Don't think you'll go too wrong with what you've described. Especially if it has headlights for wintertime snow throwing.

Tough machines. Repair parts are readily available. Some from auto parts store and other from Case/IH or Cub Cadet. If you wait patiently, parts tractors can be reasonably obtained.

Parts wear out, what you will find that needs repairing after 40 plus years is a guess. Once repaired, probably good to go for another 40 years. Plenty of how to information available on repairs.

The cc122 is a Good machine. I have one from the orginal owner it has a new replacement 12 hp Kolher engine in it that’s why I grabbed it for the new engine. It’s been sitting for years runs like a top. I got lucky again with my cc70 the orginal owner installed a new Kolher 8hp engine in it. Another save from the barn. I pull almost 1/3 cord of firewood in the trailer with the 70.

Don’t anyone think these little heavy duty garden tractors can’t work. I moved 6yds of fill from a dump truck as fast as he could bring them with the cc70 with the snow plow. They all laughed at me when I drove over there. They weren’t laughing when I was done leveling it off. The little machine that could. :worthy:
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Not exactly free, trading labor. I work pretty cheap when that happens! I believe this is the third owner, his brother got it from a retired tool and diemaker, then went fixed several items using OEM parts. Since then it probably hasn't mowed a total of 20 acres. I'm very comfortable with the mechanical condition, mainly wondering what areas I'll need to keep an eye on after I get it and start using it. Thanks for all the replies. John

Routine maintenance and lub the mower deck spindles before each use.

I wouldn't worry about what can or will go wrong. You will find something that needs repaired; sooner, later, eventually.

I have owned narrow framed Cub Cadets since 1980. Currently own 3 in work ready condition. 2 of which I rebuilt last winter. Have a 122 with rear PTO that I'm slowly parting out - - saving the rear end parts to put in my standard Cub (tractor). Have parts from a hydrostat under the bench.

Sourcing parts. Narrow framed Cub Cadets, parts tractor condition, few years back, could have been purchased for $100-. Example, the drive shaft for a manual transmission sells for over $100- at Cub Cadet dealers. Couple of parts off of a parts tractors, money ahead.

The 122, locally, in running condition, would sell at auction for $400- to $500-.

The new baby showed up in my drive this morning, He even threw in a QA 36 Snow Blower! I'll try to post some pictures ASAP. He put a red bow on the seat, wish I had got a picture of that. Debbie got a good chuckle over the bow. Now the serious questions start. The blower appears to be complete with the exception of the lift arm bracket (pg 5 & 10) of the QA-36 OM. Is this part still available or can someone give me the dimensions so I can fab one? I'm going to have to find a parts manual for the attachments but that's down the road. Also, is there a way to ID the 42" deck with cast iron ends? That has to be the heaviest built deck I've ever seen, no wonder its lasted so long. I even got an extra set of new blades w/IH part nos. stamped in. Last question for now: the manual calls for 30W, can 10 or 15W 30 be used in these old Kohler engines or should I stick to straight weight? Thanks to everyone who replied earlier and I appreciate any advice/help I can get.
John

I've used a piece of chain with shackles on each end for the lift rod. It's just a lot easier than getting the bar exactly right, and the lift doesn't offer any down pressure anyway.

In the winter I would recommend 10w-30, but in the summer I'd run straight 30w. Also, the original oil (and oil sold by Cub Cadet) is called Low Ash oil, and it's not a detergent oil. It just helps keep the valves quiet and keeps things lubed a little better in these old Kohler engines.

Good luck,
Bill

I used a chain for the lift for the front blade on my 123.

Thanks T-Mo. The picture of your set-up really clears things up on the lift. John
