Peter, we had a lecture on growing rice, at the last farmer conference I attended. I didn't go to that lecture, but maybe should have!

I was going to try some rice, BUT the grain has to be scarified to remove hull, like oats/etc., so I dropped that idea.

People keep asking me if I’ve done anything to our garden yet. I say no it’s too early, I’ve seen it snow here in April before. Well guess what?

Yeah, it’s snowing. Not a lot but it’s been cold the past couple nights. Friend of mine has been watering strawberries the last 2 mornings I’ve came to work it’s been so cold. I still don’t get how ice protects the plants.

I'm still 2 months away from being "frost safe". A lot of apple orchards water their trees here during frost days when the trees are blossomed out. (spray water on the leaves & blossoms. I guess the warm water helps keep the leaves warmer. I don't think you are supposed to let the green leaves (and blossom's) freeze.

Asparagus is south facing garden is starting to pop up.

City has mowed and lined the soccer and base ball diamonds.

74 degrees today, guessing spring is finally here.

April 9,---I only got 1 row of the onion plants in before we got more rain! 6 more rows to go. The rows are 230' long --- This is getting bad. Looks like we could be in for rain thru the whole next week. Cold wind today (10th) The onion plants should have been in the ground 2 weeks ago so we will see what they do this late.
No potatoes yet either. Did want to plant a few, maybe 20 pounds of seed. Rhubarb just starting to show, a few flowers up/blooming, lilacs showing small buds. ---Most everything is holding back. --- Well except the grass and weeds! thanks; sonny

Was able to finally get in our garden and cut it for the first time. Rained here Monday and I didn’t have to get the screwdriver and hammer out to unclog it.

Couldn't plant onions, but did get some horseradish dug and mailed some crowns out to a few people wanting this old variety.

We did make a bit for me, ( Virginia don't like it), so a pint lasts me 1 year. This is from an old farmstead that was at least 150 years old when bulldozed down many years ago and I grabbed as many plants as I could. After a few years of harvesting and transplanting we have a good amount going. I am making a row on the west end of one of the gardens, as it seams to really like it there.
Looks like we are sposed to get more rain today, sky is hanging very grey, wind id strong, NOT a pleasant day outside! thanks; sonny

Today I did finally get the rest of the onion plants in the ground. ----Cold/wind, and not a nice day but they are calling for rain OR snow they don't know which. It wont hurt the onions. ---The ground is not working up good this year,--still too wet down deep, so I just skimmed a few inches with the horse tiller, --Didn't chance the big guy! Ground still muddy down 6" or so, top fairly dry. Thanks; sonny

Not much to look at, but the onions are still standing, so maybe some of them will grow. ---Ended up with 4 3/4 rows 230 feet long. Time will tell! thanks sonny

Weather still not great, we now have cold, high wind again. Did get some peas, parsnips, beets, carrots, lettuce, radishes, a few peach trees and new strawberry row planted. Ground has a hard crust on top and down 4", mud, too wet to work. I have been trying to break the top 2" with the small tillers so it will dry down far enough that I can get the big tiller in there. Rhubarb almost big enough to get a few stalks to cook. Asparagus not doing a thing, a few spindly stalks and I didn't harvest them. Not starting off to a good year.
How are you guys doing on your end?

20 days of rain, this month, so far, and rain is forecast for tonight. Don't expect to be planting anything, any time soon. First lettuce got harvested in the greenhouse. Never made it to the garden.

Ditto on the rain Ed. Rice is looking like the crop to grow this year. Woke up to heavy frost this morning.
Usually plant Memorial Day Weekend, so we have 4 weeks to dry things out.

Looks like our sweet potato plants will be shipped Tuesday, and we still have mud, so this in gonna get interesting again!---The onion plants look fair considering what they went thru! Did plant a row of sunflowers today and cultivated the onions.
Peas are coming up as is radishes, turnips, lettuce, spinach,----- also have a million volunteer sunflowers coming up, most of them will get tilled under.
The radar is showing 100% chance of t-storms again Tuesday. Turning into a ruff year so far!
