plan your veggies

Postby Boss Hog » Tue Feb 03, 2009 8:01 pm

I am sure most of you no this but some may not.
When planting
1. Dont plant your potatoes near your Tomatoes or squash They dont do well together
2. keep the beans away from the onions
3. Broccoli away from the tomatoes
These plants just dont do well together

If you plant onions in between tomato plants you do not have to spray for bugs on the tamato plants. nematodes and beetles do not like onions.

Also, don't plant tomatoes anywhere near a tree in the walnut family, e.g. black walnut, english walnut, butternut.

Thanks to all for the tips. I'm still a novice at this and It's sure nice to have folks here like you all that have all this farming experience and know-how. I'm planning a 1/2 acre garden this year (up from the 10'x10' one I had when I was living in the city) and I hope it'll be a success. I'll take all the help I can suck up.

I dont have too much experience with a garden - I help my uncle now and then, but when I went to plan my own for this summer (which isn't going to happen :( ) I found several tips including some cheap pest control ideas. Some of the tips I found were :

Beans like celery/ cucumbers
Squash likes cucumbers/ corn
corn likes pumpkins/ beans/cucumbers
Tomatoes shouldn't be planted near corn

I can't verify these personally, but those sprung up on several searches I made. Someone correct me if they think this is incorrect ! I also was told not to plant tall/ trellised crops on the east or west sides of the garden, as they can block some amount of sunlight for the smaller crops (morning/late afternoon). I had a whole big garden planned out - a lot of thought put in it and nothing to show for it this year :( Maybe next year!

Sonny, I know about your gardening success but would you take a chance if you had a choice?

Dan could you clarify your question?---our gardens were all by "chance"--Trial and error, etc!--and we still try different methods/varieties/ etc. every year in a test plot in one area of the small garden! thanks; sonny

What I meant was taking a chance on planting something next to something else because they don't like each other. You mentioned that you have not had any problems in that area. But some other gardeners stick by these ideas religiously.
Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks Dan!--we could do,(and have done) the planting as per the "old wives tale"---but have found that they dont hold true,--at least not from our many years of gardening . --Maters love taters and dont let anyone tell you any different! lol!!---books are written to sell and make the writers/ publishers money!-- AND confuse the readers!!We have proven that there is only one bug control and it comes from a liquid sprayed on!--dont matter where the goodies are planted, or who the neighbors are!lol!
The paper has to lay still while the book is being printed!---thats why I dont do books or their contents because they dont work for us!

Everyone has the right to plant as they choose, but we see so many disappointed folks who have garden failures by over-looking simple things/procedures that could have helped them, just because THE book didnt tell them the real facts!
Our lifetime in gardens has taught us many things about what works in this area for us, and that is the way we will again for 2009 be doing, and we want ALL of you to participate in the 2009 garden log and show us your bounty in motion and really enjoy the garden as well as taste its bounty,--no matter what order you planted in!! thanks; sonny

Old wives tail is planting potatoes with the eyes up , Planting types that do well together is not an old wives tale, Nor is planting by the moon, anything that can control the tides in the sea has a bit of effect on other things. But as you said to each his own. I am only trying to help people that need it . Your garden is always a nice one .

Don, thanks for the Purdue post on the walnut trees! I had heard there were some plants and trees that struggled growing under or near black walnut trees. I have never been able to validate that; most people look at me like I was crazy (which I guess is partly true). We planted several hemlock trees and they have struggled... but they are on the approved list.... so must be something else going wrong. Some, in other parts of the yard have done great; these have turned into Charlie Brown's Christmas Trees! :D Oh well, but it just goes to show me that I learn something new every day on this forum! Thanks Guys!

A sawmill down the road keeps saw dust for farmers/gardeners. They let is rot and then give it away. They are very careful to keep the walnut away from this pile. It will poison the soil. The extension agent would not confirm nor deny this. But like some other stuff would you take a chance if you had a choice?
