Farmall Cub

Just planted some Rattlesnake beans. Corn has started up, so planted between my corn. Do any of ya'll plant these beans and do you have good luck with them? They're also called Preacher beans.

We plant climbing crops on the fences here,---but some folks use the corn!---I would think they would pull the corn down with all the weight, but maybe not!
I think the variety you are talking about might have other names too!--My parents planted some sort of bean like that when I was really young, but I dont remember what they said the name was!---they did have good crops of them ! thanks; sonny

I have not heard of rattlesnake beans before. Course that doesn't mean a whole lot. There are lots of things I haven't heard of. But they used to plant whipporwill peas between the corn so they would have a place to climb. Nothing like growing your own trellis. What do the rattlesnake beans look like? Just curious.

I am afraid of snakes no way would i eat those beans someow they would probably bite me.

Some say they call them Rattlesnake beans because of the color, other call them that for the way they do when they are ready to pick. Some say they curl up like a snake when they are ready to pick. I guess either one seems logical and makes a little sense. My StepDad says they are good and are one of the best tasting beans. I dunno, I guess I'll see soon. I am used to the Blackeyed peas myself.

I am kinda worried bout the weight myself. I really wasn't gonna do this. I bought Silver King and set it on out. Wasn't planning on planting beans with them. If I woulda went on and bought the regular field corn I wouldn't worry bout it so much, it would hold the weight. He says these rattlesnake beans produce quite a bit of product. Told me I might have to run me a wire anyway to help with the weight. I just moved down on this place and plowed up a decent spot, was just wanting to see if any thing would grow without to much adding of ferts and lime. Just trial and error at this point. Looks like they're gonna grow well. As far as I can tell, every seed I planted has come up. All are between 3 and 4 inches tall right now. Wasn't a whole lot. 2 rows about 30 ft long. The rest of the garden is still producing rocks, they seem to grow well in this area. All sizes from potatoes to watermelons. When I figure out the best way to cook and eat em, I think I am gonna can some. I should have enough to eat for a couple years. Maybe the beans will do well too.

That IS the same beans that my folks grew!!!---same color!! they were good!---If the sweet corn has good stalks you should be ok, but just as added measure the ole extra wire might pay off in keeping a few more of them up off the ground!---sounds like a good start on the new garden, too. thanks; sonny
