allowing hunting this year

Since the resident deer have broken their long standing agreement with me (If the freezer is full of vegetables, there's no room for venison), I am allowing deer hunting, this year. Anyone with a Massachusetts deer license is invited, except the "bottle in one hand, gun in the other" type. Goose hunting is also encouraged. The "resident" flocks can strip a cover crop off a field in 2 days! The deer ate most of my butternut squash, and are stealing anything else that they like. Ed

Hmm Ed, could you grain a nice buck for me and be around to field dress him? Just how plentiful are the deer out in the Eastern part of the state, might be worth the trip.

There's a bunch around here. Wouldn't be surprised if some were picking beans, right now, in my neighbor's field, across the street. Danged varmints!
I don't grain them, dress them, undress them, or anything else.

Edit: Thanks for the offer, but Oasge county, Missouri has have between 15 and 30 deer per square mile. And that estimate may be a bit low.

The deer herd seems to be down in Maine from the deep snows?? But there is a momma and a little one hanging around the fenced in outer works at Ft Adams. Good thing I had a spotter going before me the first time I mowed, bambi didn't move when the Cub came up.

You can come and shoot them, just don't get caught without the proper paperwork. Ed

One 6 pointer, taken recently. Tracks, all over the fields. Talked to some goose hunters, yesterday. They were being watched by 2 deer, while setting out their decoys. Ed

I hate a deer. We are over-run with them in eastern NC, for several years in the 80s you could not grow a soybean here, and I would prefer not to even talk about car-deer collisions. My dad has some good fellows that hunt his farm every year. It helps but I would be happy to see them eradicated at least from the atlantic coast to the appalachians!

So, what do out of state licences cost in these places overrun? The freezer sure could use some filling. I have only seen 1 deer anywhere near here in the last 6 yrs.

Dale you are lucky. They're everywhere here. This time of year you have to be real careful driving. One tore about $2000 off our car about this time last year....

Ignorant rednecks that just want to run dogs and won't kill anything that doesn't look like bullwinkle have really contributed to the problem in these parts. (Not criticizing trophy hunters, or anyone who hunts with dogs, just that in my area I really am talking about "ignorant rednecks".) The guys that hunt our farm like antlers ok, but they're really interested in putting meat in the freezer.

I think that the out of state license, and the cost of getting here and back, would cost much more than the meat is worth. License is $150, I think. Ed

Dale,

When I visited Kodiak, he told me that both in-state and out-of-state hunters could take 10 does and 2 bucks. Didn't ask how much a license cost. Happy hunting. Oh, Kodiak got 2 the first day he went out.

They're sure plentiful here, as well. I have a small herd of 6 or 7 eating from the feeder you guys saw at DSCF. Real close to the tractor barn.
