Farmall Cub

My cousin Jim is in the middle of scanning over 2,000 slides from my Uncle Mike's collection. As he comes across any of the work being done on our family farm he is sending them to me. Last night I got these. They are from the 40's and 50's. Jim's dad, Mike, said that many photos were used in one of the national farm magazines but he wasn't sure which magazines or what years. Jim and I are trying to find info on that.

Today, the equipment may have changed, but the farmer doing the work; still has to be young and in very good shape as the person in the picture.

I guess your family fed out beef cattle with the hay? The wheat and straw I assumed was sold?

The part of Ohio I was from had large endless fields, which looks about the same as those pictures…..big beautiful farm country.

God I was glad when Saturday night came…Sunday; early morning feeding, Church, big afternoon family dinner…then get ready for the next week….. It may have been the good old days, but it made me old before my time…

Jack we had mostly dairy cows. My cousin still farms a big portion of the old place and still has cows. A lot of the hay was sold off also.

Dairy, when did you get time off…and when did you sleep; with an operation that big? Nobody understands the Dairy business until you farm it.

Wow…that’s a lot of square bales going down the road…even by today’s standards. The first time in many years we did square bales of hay and straw last summer because of a special order. We almost sold those old balers a few years back too.

The only picture I can find is a straw load going out after wheat harvest. Four of these tractor loads would go out in one day to be loaded on a truck ….I don’t think this operation today is big as yours was back in the ‘40’s. This young lad wanted this picture taken of him so it could be sent to his girlfriend back home….

Enjoyed the pictures, but never really enjoyed hauling hay. We did not have the lifts, hot waspy lofts - yuk. But I did enjoy living on the farm even though we only had eighty acres, cows, horses, hogs, gardens, truck patches, and coon dogs.

Gotta love those old photos! I.m anxious to see more of them. I don't think many pictures were taken around our farm, film & processing were expensive. Picture taking was generally saved for family get togethers.

I don't know if I like them being called OLD pictures. That was me growing up. There was a topic on here. About what dairy farms did when the elect. went off. Looking at the pictures it came back to me. We had a big window by the compressor. We lined the old Farmall up with the window and ran the belt thru the window to the pulley on the compressor. On a good day we put a 1000 bales of hay in the barn a day. Our hay elevator was hooked up just like the one in the pictue.

Jack, I was five when Dad died so we moved off the family farm and into the city. I had no connection with the dairy. My job at the age of five was to ride on the hay wagon now and then to make sure the guys loaded the wagon right

My grandfather was killed in a farm related accident in 1941. My grandmother then owned the land which had three houses on it. The three boys who stayed and worked the farm lived there. She lived in the main house with my dad's younger brother and sister. There were six kids in my family so we got the bigger of the two other houses. My one uncle was getting married just after dad died so he and my new aunt moved into the house we lived in. Another uncle lived in the third house with his wife. My dad's other brother's and sisters all lived in the city and did not farm.

I'd love to have this umbrella.

Bill, May I add my thanks. I had never seen an elevator run by a flat belt to a tractor. PTO's yes. Dad used an electric motor. Seeing something different is only one of the reasons I enjoy these old pictures. Vern
