Hot, Hot, Darn Hot

Postby Eugene » Wed Jun 15, 2016 7:08 pm

98 degrees on the digital thermometer under the north side of the house porch with a ceiling. Heat index close to 105 degrees. Tomorrow even hotter.

Watered the vegetables yesterday evening and again today around 5 PM. Some of my container strawberry plants have died, others showing severe heat stress. Vegetables in the ground/soil are still doing well.

Have what I think is an old septic tank in the back yard. When the soil moisture gets very low the surface grass above the tank goes dormant. Grass is dormant. Doesn't normally go dormant until late August. Not sure if this is an indicator of a pending drought.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I need to start watering the garden. Had a good chance of rain forecasted for Tuesday, but didn't materialize. Haven't had a good rain for a couple weeks now.

Looks like the forecast for Union Grove, WI, (the RPRU) is OK for today, but really nice for Friday and Saturday.

Dry, Dry, Darn Dry.

Today, June 19. Normally 4.5" of rain in June. .30" of rain since 26 May and most of that, .22" came on 27 May.

Today, spot sprayed pasture for multi-floral rose and thistle. Pasture grass in open areas is dormant. Grass in shaded areas still green. Tops of weeds in shaded areas next to year round spring have been clipped off by cattle or deer.

So far farmers have baled one cutting of hay. Need rain for another cutting or 2 of hay to feed cattle through the winter.

Hot all weekend here as well. Picked my first round of blackberries on Saturday; will start picking every other day until done (about 2-3 weeks). Will make some jelly and I'm sure a cobbler is in my future as well. They're quite good on homemade vanilla ice cream as we watch fireworks in a couple weeks. :)

Started watering the garden over the weekend. Looks really good. Starting digging potatoes and onions. Like cooking them on the grille.

Wow. Today's forecast for central Missouri is 100 degrees. A/C has been on in the house for about 2 weeks. Night time temperatures have been in the upper 70's.

Sweltering here, reached 86 this afternoon, only expected to drop to 55 tonight. We should get a little relief tomorrow with a forecast high of 75.

Yesterday Longmont set a new record high of 103* which broke the old record of 101* from 1922. Fortunately only 87* today.

Jim, I'd take a "sweltering" 86 degrees in KCMO over what we're having. But hey, it's summer. It's supposed to be hot. :D

had 2.01 rain a couple days ago,--5.44 month total but heat index is 115, and wind/hail at 30 mph.----garden suffering from weeds and its slow painful job getting them out.---had most of it fairly clean til we got hit by storms,--NOW the weeds have taken over again.---cant till mud with the tillers, so gotta wait several more days to cultivate again. thanks; sonny

Afternoon, 23 Jul. 98 degrees under the north side porch roof. Heat index 112 deg. Had to go to the acreage to search 3 buildings for parts, pick up a 1 KW gen set, shuffle some stuff from the basement to the shop.

Total task was 20 minutes or so at acreage. Spent the 10 minutes driving back from acreage to home moping sweat from forehead in A/C pickup so I could see to drive.

Sprayed the blackberries, apples, melons, and other garden crops with insecticide 5 days ago. 7 day wait before harvesting. Heat wave should, hopefully, be over by then.

Dry. Soil moisture level is low. Been getting a few showers, .010 inch or so every once in a while. Not enough to soak into the soil.
I have an excuse. CRS.
