Finally stopped raining.

Strawberries about ready to pick. Problem is that with the previous lengthy rainy season, top of the strawberries look great, ready to pick. Bottom of the strawberries are rotted.

Tomorrow afternoon, pick asparagus and start to cleanout the half rotten strawberries.

Had between 7 and 8" of rain over the past 5 days. Just a bit of water in the house basement. Low water crossings plugged up.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Something has been eating the tops off my strawberry plants, garden plot behind the house. Yesterday afternoon set up two live traps baited with apples. Thinking rabbits. Have caught rabbits in my garden before in live traps. This morning I found one of the traps knocked over and the other moved a foot or so distant and at an angle. Both traps tripped.

Purchased a cantaloupe from the farmer market. Reset the traps, baited with cantaloupe.

Thinking, groundhog. Have seen one in the area. Don't dare run out and shoot the groundhog next time I see it. I'm about 1/2 a city block from the sheriff's office and the highway patrol sub office. Down side of living in town, specially next to the police station.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene, IF you can find the varmint's holes, Block one, and wiggle 4 to 6 feet of garden hose down, into the other hole. Add a funnel to the hose. Block the hole, and pour bleach and ammonia, down the hose. Pull the hose, and seal the opening it left. If they are home, when you do it, they'll be home forever. I use a couple of cups of each, bleach and ammonia. Mixed, it makes a poisonous gas! Yes, I play dirty!

Guessing, the groundhog's residence is on neighboring private property. Getting permission to enter neighboring property would be a problem. About 3/4 of the neighboring housing is rentals and the assumed location of the den is on an apartment complex property owned by an out of the area corporation.

The only time I see the groundhog is when it comes out of a culvert crossing the entrance to the county parking lot, then walks past neighbor's house.

Will see if my traps catch the varmint. If not, will probably ask the local Conservation Dept. officer for assistance.

Ha. I've got some strawberry plants and a few groundhogs in my yard but they've left them alone. My problem so far as been the deer helping themselves to the seedlings in the raised beds. I need to put up some bird netting...

Another hard frost this morning here in the Michigan-Mitten. Woke up to 30 degrees on the thermometer. Hopefully, the apple trees (currently in full bloom) won't kick off the buds.

Got all but 40 or so sweet tato plants in today and 50 cabbage plants in.---also planted the beets and a few carrots.---Sis got 2 pounds of Carola potatoes, (were suposed to have been sent 2 months ago) also 25 strawberry plants.---The rest of her order they said was "not available" , -- guess ole GURNEY company still the same ole crooks they have always been!! ---they won't send a refund either and we are talking a big order!----Sis forgot that it best to not order from GURNEY and company!!!
Had to resort to till (with the little 917-H) and not plow the rest of the gardens this year because it's too late for plowing now!---Do have a couple narrow strips that will have to be plowed for field corn, so if it dont make it its not a big deal!---Cousin says "it'll be fine" to plow for it! lol!!
did get the onions cultivated again and also some of the tatoes.----thats about where we stand here for now!---Keep the snorkles up and push on!!!!! thanks; sonny

Got 2+ inches of rain, while I was at the "Waller". Waiting for it to dry out, but, showers are forecast for every day, for a week, that won't happen, soon.

After the month's quota of rain, in the first 2 weeks, we got 90 degrees, and wind, so things dried out. Got plowing and some planting done. Back to normal temps, on the weekend, so I should get most things planted. Surprised to see corn, planted before going to the Waller, is germinating. 4 inches of rain, on it, in 2 weeks! Planted a second planting, today. Spread about 20 spreaders of horse manure, today, where the squash and pumpkins are going to be planted. No low temps, in the extended forecast, so I'll probably set out tender plants, this weekend.

I began planting sweet corn last weekend. This is land that appears to have never been tilled before (given the amount of gravel and rocks). One week in and I'm seeing progress.

Glad your corn is doing good. I always wondered why we had to pick rock up each year out of the garden and fields dad would plant corn or whatever else in. He said it had something to do with the moon. I did a search on Bing last week and actually found it has to do with freezing that pushes the rocks to the surface. What I read says water actually freezes under the rock first and pushes the rock to the top a little each time it freezes eventually bringing it to the top. It makes more sense than the moon conspiracy he told me as a kid

We had a stone boat (flat skid) as a kid. Every spring we would spend a day or two picking up rocks from the fields. This was in west central Iowa. We then put the stones in the ditches. Eventually, fourty or fifty years, the stones and washed in soil filled the ditches.

Now living in the Ozark, most of the acreage is pasture. Pick up rocks large enough to get hit with the mowers. Also deposit the rocks in ditches.

I picked up the big rocks that would interfere with the disc after I plowed it up the first time. When I till this fall I'll get my kids out there picking up the smaller rocks as they interfere with my little push planter..
