Ignition timing
Cub. 154 lowboy with all new ignition parts including coil and plug wires. Tried to set timing and the timing marks on pulley are at about 10 o'clock and the pointer is at 2 o'clock. I advance the distributer to move timing marks toward pointer and engine starts to run rough and then quits at about the 12 o'clock position. Engine runs good at 10 o'clock position. Why is the timing indicators off so bad? Yet the engine starts and runs great but it does get hot!!!! After about 30 minutes

Re: Ignition timing
Distributor is not correctly timed to the engine. Distributor is off a tooth or two.
Rotate engine over until the rotor points to the #1 plug tower on the distributor cap. Then set engine on #1 cylinder TDC, pointer and TDC pulley mark aligned.
Mark the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor case. Remove the distributor. Now reinstall the distributor so half way #1 and #2 plug wire terminal is straight up and that the rotor is pointing at your mark on the distributor case. May take 2 or 3 tries to get it right.
At this point you can static time your ignition to engine.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Ignition timing
Thanks I will give this a trym. Also does the12 volt coil that I purchased need to have a resistor either internal or external?

Yes, one or the other. Needs the resistor.Rcpilot wrote:Does the12 volt coil that I purchased need to have a resistor either internal or external?

Re: Ignition timing
I've encountered your issue before. The 154 has a starter/generator and a fairly large front pulley. This puts a lot of strain on the key in the pulley, they sometimes shear and the timing mark gets out of whack.

Re: Ignition timing
Agree with Gary, the key (or the front pulley) is probably worn or broken. (My 184 had 1/3 the key worn away)
Pull the front (#1) spark plug to find the actual top dead center of the compression stroke. Then static time the distributor. (rotor should be pointing at 1:00). Connect the front (#1) spark plug wire to the distributor post that is at 1:00. Going clockwise to 4:00, connect spark plug wire #3. Moving clockwise again (now near 7:00) connect the rear (#4) spark plug wire. Finally, connect the #2 plug wire into the 10:00 position.
I would recommend checking out the front pulley situation before using a timing light. The pulley notches may be leading you astray.
