I just bought a 74 154, it's going to get a full tune up but after the motor is running better, I've got to get it moving.
The shifter moves around completely free. I'm told that the ball at the base, that engages the forks, had broken off.
Can anyone direct me to any threads that have a tear down/repair.
I've been told this could be welded, is this true. Has anyone hear welded one and it worked. That would be nice as I'm a budget.
I'm new here so hopefully after this past I can access the manuals and any other forever is will appreciated.

Re: 154 shifter broke
I am pretty sure there was a post about repairing that ball end, but can't find it right now. However, I did find this post which shows how to disassemble the shifter assembly, which is a first step!

If I find more, I will add it. Good luck!

Shifter rebuild starts towards the bottom of this page:

The rest of that thread is a great read if you want to know how to build a cub from scratch, a truly impressive restoration.

Re: 154 shifter broke
You will have to remove the sheet metal from the tractor's rear. Once the sheet metal is removed, taking off the transmission top/shifter assembly is easy.
Repair parts can be obtained from the advertisers on this site, or a want ad in The Vine.
While you have the sheet metal off, inspect the clutch and throw out bearing. Now would be a good time to replace the clutch brake pucks and perhaps the throw out bearing. Make adjustments. You will need a service manual for the adjustments and a parts manual.
Inspect the PTO clutch system.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: 154 shifter broke
The previous owner of my 154 indicated to me that the same thing happened to him, he said he welded it back on but it was tricky getting it on at the right angle.
He was one of those 90 year old guys that has been farming and fixing his whole life, hope I'm as well of when I'm 90. I'm still trying to get the manuals unlocked...
