185 runs then dies!

Postby JohnnyJay » Tue Apr 10, 2018 7:14 pm

My 185 worked fine one day and has since given me a fit. It's sputtering and lacks power, thought I had it good then dies. I've checked the plugs and gone through the carb 3 times. I can get it to run really rich for about 30 seconds and it shuts off, but can get it to start back up right after? Any ideas?

Fuel flow obstruction. Probably in the fuel tank or fuel filter.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I replaced the fuel filter and still same problem. Also checked the lines. I'm at a loss.

Are you sure the filter is for a gravity fed fuel system and not one for a fuel pump system?

Also check the fuel flow to the carburetor and then through the carburetor.

Did you check for some sort of obstruction to the fuel outlet inside the tank?

That I don't know. I ran it out of gas and figured I would change filter. Old one was a wix new one is AutoZone. I'll do that tomorrow. Never thought about that. Checked lines and all clear.

Did you check to see if something is sticking in the tank?---these gas bowls have a habit of corroding shut up in the tank end, ---I had several that way. Thanks; sonny

Replaced the fuel filter with same as before, drained the tank and blew out the lines. Still running ruff for 20-30 seconds then shuts off. But I can restart it right away. I'm at a loss now.

Check the quality of the spark IMMEDIATELY after it stops.

I had the same problem with my 154 when I first purchased it. I was mowing and it died. I waited a few minutes it would start up. This was getting worse. Finally it died and didn’t restart. I took off the gas cap it had plenty of gas, I took the fuel line off the carb no gas. I blew into the line going to the gas tank and heard a pop. A small pebble was in the fuel valve in the tank plugging the gas flow. It got wedged in there.

A broken wire in the ign coil can heat up and expand the gap where it’s broke. A shorted condenser can do the same think. Even the rotor in the distributor can short to the distributor shaft. Check it for cooked plastic on the rotor we’re it slides on the shaft.

Check the coil wire that goes to the distributor cap for rust. They make a tool to clean the cap and coil female connections.

Check for spark when it dies.
Check for gas flow when it dies.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I agree either fuel or spark. Get yourself an inline spark tester and a can of starting fluid. Install the spark tester on any cylinder and pull the air hose off the carb. Start the engine and wait till starts running bad and give the engine a small shot of starting fluid while watching the spark tester. If engine smoothes out when you give it some starting fluid you have a fuel delivery problem. If spark is a problem you should see a change in brightness of spark tester.

And remove any automotive type fuel filter and just bypass it. Almost forgot that.

Running again. Pulled the plugs and aired out the motor, adjusted the float in the carb, new coil and condenser.
