Postby staninlowerAL » Tue Jul 31, 2018 5:02 pm

Any suggestions to remove the drive shaft? The engine is removed and I need to completely remove the drive shaft. Thanks.

pull?

It's only held on by rust at this point. The driveshaft runs in splines in the clutch, but isn't physically bolted or secured. You can just pull it out.

Edit: Looks like you have an early one. I think it's the same except you get to remove an extra pillow block and bearing ?

Yep, it's the early version. I saw what looks to be a bearing between two flanges on the forward end. Looks like it might be the assembly #6, 36, 37, 36 in the box on the parts diagram. Thanks.

Update on removing the shaft. I removed the 5 bolts holding the cross-member bearing holder to the frame rails and the entire assembly slipped forward. Thanks towhead for the insight. I don't have the manual for this but it looks like if the engine would have been in place, it would have to be moved forward enough to allow access to the cross-member bolts. Also thanks to rockfarmer who saved the parts machine instead of junking it, some of it will benefit another Forum member.

Glad you got it out.

On the early ones, the motor needs to be moved forward since the driveshaft will hit the engine flywheel. On the later ones, the flywheel has a bore in it that the drive shaft can slip into , so you can take the shaft out without moving the motor.
