Traction for Plowing Snow

I have a fairly long asphalt driveway and this past weekend was the first time I got to plow it with my 154. I was surprised at how many times I got it stuck, on the driveway, with one wheel spinning. (Single Brake setup, turf tread on ag rims)

I figured as heavy as the tractor was, and having a fairly flat driveway I wouldn't have an issue.

Any suggestions on traction control? Would chains make a difference? Wheel weights, how much do the factory ones weigh?

My load cub as used in its previous life to plow out a small car lot.

They had calcium filled tires and tire chains.

I never personally tried it for plowing, but they kept it around for a while so it must have worked!

Get some ladder style tire chains and you'll never look back. I did after the umpteenth time I had to pull my Cub out of the snowbank with my compact car fitted with good snow tires.

Weight and chains are keys to moving anything but light snow. The chains can mark up your asphalt if that's a concern. I use double wheel weights and chains, I have 2 different driveways, one concrete and the other is gravel. The more weight you stack on the tractor, the less prone to spinning it will be. Less spinning equals less marking on the asphalt.

We just had 11" heavy wet snow and I was surprised at how well the 184 did. I have front plow, rear blade and tire chains.

Picked up some chain tonight, I'll make a set of chains and see how well it does, there is a slight possibility of a heavy snow storm this upcoming Saturday.

Same as coupe30 here. Blade on front, 3pt blade on rear, chains on wide turfs , no extra weight, works good for me.

Chains on balloon tires did fine for me last winter (on gravel), but we never got a bunch of snow all at one time later winter. The forecast is calling for 10" this Saturday here in central OH (better be ready ibdilbert ), so getting the blade mounted has move to up to #2 behind getting the electrical problem solved... Everything is dead, but battery charger says 75-100%... Joy!

I made chains nearly 50 years ago for what was then my dads cub. They make a world of difference. You can also add weight to the drawbar. Dad also had an H with weights, chains and a 55 gallon drum filled with water (ice?) on the drawbar. It was used for the heavy stuff including pulling my mother out of the ditch. Even then I got some wheel spin. The county repaired the asphalt the next spring. Oops. Vern

Edit: I no longer use the cub. My drive is quite steep and the cadet with a snowblower is much faster. A blower does not handle wet snow very well and the only time I have had to clear the drive this year was wet sloppy snow. I did it with the blower but..........

I have a 184 with the mckee snolander 320 blower and I run chains and have a 3 point on the 184 so for counter weight I hang a scraper blade on the back, with said set up I can back up hills in the snow
