The noise is very loud, its like a sledge hammer inside the engine, I can also feel the impact on the body. The engine turns over no problem, no obstruction, when the pistons kick in then it’s like a loud sledge hammer knocking inside the engine.

Looked at mine today, ---oil pan could come down without taking mower off, lots more room with mower off, BUT it looks like the cross member that holds steering linkage gotta come off to get front pan bolts.---Other than that it looks clear sailing under there, at least on the 185!

Check for noise around the rear flywheel and clutch too. Noise can travel down the shafts.
The rear pin the holds the flywheel to the input shaft can get worn too.
One more thought check the pto pulleys that are driven from the flywheel. Those bearings can be noisy when they go too.
I purchased one 154 where they rebuilt the engine because of it being noisey it was the pto bearings near the flywheel.

I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

If it sounds like a sledgehammer in the engine not good. Either piston slap or a rod or main bearing(s). You can remove a spark plug wire from a cylinder and run it. Do this for each cylinder. If you find one where the knock goes away there's yer problem. Piston slap a PITA but bearings not so bad as long as no spun bearings. Change them with engine in tractor. Best to Mike a rod journal to make sure doesn't already have 010 or 020 reground crank.

Time to open it up. Don't run it any further, get that oil pan off and valve cover open.
Diagnose by turning engine by hand.

Second this advice. If it is half as loud as you make it sound, the problem should be obvious on inspection. Running it will just do more damage.

Check the pto shaft bearing first. These pulleys can gall on the shaft too.
