Steering wheel removal?

Postby SONNY » Wed May 08, 2019 9:45 am

I can't get the steering wheel off the 185. I even tried heat and soaking with everything I could find. Any ideas? It has to come off to get down behind the dash to fix, throttle wire, key switch, starter sol., and a bunch of other stuff . Cant get a good grip on it with any pullers and hate to tear up a perfect steering wheel, BUT if it comes down to that, well so be it! lol! thanks sonny

I use the same puller for the Farmall Cub's front pulley on my IH built machine's steering wheels. Works, doesn't break up the steering wheel.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I made a 2 piece plate from 1/4" steel that fits under the wheel with holes for a puller. I couldn't find a commercial puller that worked.
Took a piece of steel and drilled a hole just slightly bigger than the steering shaft. Then cut the plate in half through the hole. Drilled holes to mount strips to hold plates together and drilled holes for puller legs.

I drilled and tapped two 1/4-20 threaded holes in the steering wheel then used a steering wheel puller kit to remove it, becareful the shaft is hollow.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Great ideas guys!--- Got looking around and found my bearing splitter, so I got it around the shaft, then cut 2 pieces of threaded rod, ( didn't have long enough bolts), then used my old harmonic pulley puller and a couple nuts and washers.
Got everything tight and nuttin,---hit the main bolt a couple times with 4 pound hammer and puller got a little loose, so I tightened it as much as it would go and hit it again, took 3 hitches but it finally came off, A real nasty lookin thing inside.
Now I need throttle wire, ignition switch, starter sol., and a few minor parts/wires/etc. to fix the problem on that end.
Then comes what to do with the motor knock! thanks; sonny
