185 no motion except in creeper?

Postby MikeEyre74 » Wed Jul 03, 2019 9:25 pm

So here’s the story. I have owned this tractor for less than 24 hours. I brought it home and it worked only in first and rivers in high and low range ( this machine has a creeper year). While mowing my neighbors yard while they are on a trip, the machine went “pop“ and it just stopped forward motion while I was in high range first gear mowing. Whatever I did made no difference and it was just stuck it felt like the engine was responding to the clutch, but no matter what I did with the transmission and what year I was in, and there was no forward motion to be made. I called in reinforcements, my neighbor, and we pulled the machine up the hill with a toe strap With the intention of dragging it home when I figured I would give it one more try when I felt something funny happened under the seat… I engaged first gear and it started to move, with the creeper here in gaged. When I switched it to high range, nothing would happen, but in the creeper low gear it would work. Second and third I knew were shot before I brought it home and they are also still useless. I’m not sure why it didn’t work no matter what I did at the bottom of the hill in the backyard, but somewhere between there and a 20 foot drag uphill, things started to work with the creeper here engaged. Any ideas what I should check first?

Check the transmission first for your 2nd/3rd gear problem.

Creeper. You will need to pull the creeper and disassemble to discover the problem. Hopefully inexpensive fix.

Story. When I purchased my 154 it only had creeper low, all transmission gears functioned. Cost me around $6.00 to repair the creeper. Main problem was a sheared woodruff key.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene, The problem was exactly as you figured it was. It’s a Woodruff that got sheared off. It’s tiny!
