Clutch brake adjuster keeps bending?

Postby MikeEyre74 » Sat Jul 27, 2019 1:22 pm

I just replaced gears and shifter forks inside the transmission, got everything buttoned back up enough to take it for a test drive and found this once I got back from around the yard.

I figured maybe I had it set up wrong, because I noticed when I took it out for the initial trip when I put on the clutch the whole tractor came to a stop like I was applying the brakes and it would not coast. I got back and found this was bent, so I unbent it and then went for another drive and felt it start binding up again and saw that this was happening once more.

I don’t understand what’s going on here, but I am not sure that the part that I copied this replacement that I had to make by drilling a hole in a bolt was actually correct? The one that was on there was broken when I got it from the previous owner, so I am just copying a broken part. What am I doing wrong?

Grade 8 bolt instead of the all thread.

What’s causing it to bend tho? It’s a tension force on a straight line. Pulling! There’s nothing there causing a bending force like that? It’s like someone smashed it with a hammer? I can’t see the reason for why it’s bending is the thing...

Compare your current set up with the parts manual.

Not 100% sure from the photos, appears that part #8, yoke clutch brake, is in the wrong location.

You mean “upside down“? I noticed that the first time it bent. When I took it back into the garage and saw that, I figured I would flip it upside down 180° and see if that made a difference… And it bent again. Still, neither of those arrangements makes sense to me as to why it looks like somebody hit it with a hammer from a top down direction? The only way to put force on that bolt would be to pull back on the clutch from the backside of the lever… It just doesn’t make sense to me?

I would contact HamiltonBob and see if he has the bolt clutch brake and the two springs.

Edit. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=101724

Above link has a photo with measurements of the clutch brake bolt.

I think I’m just going to make it, like the guy in your above link did. I think the problem with the bending rod is because my brake clutch buttons are so worn down they’re almost non-existent. The hinged piece that presses on them is turned down at a funny angle as a result.

I’m wondering tho... would it be structurally “more sound” to use a double nut in place of where that hole with the cotter pin is? That way there wouldn’t be a weak spot to start a bend and, frankly, I wouldn’t have to drill a hole in a bolt which is just painful for me because I don’t have a V-block and a drill press?

I would take Eugene’s suggestion and get proper bolt. If you don’t want to go the Hamilton bob route, then post an ad in the vine

Edit: and the brake pucks

While you are there, replace the clutch brake buttons.

I would use a grade 5 or 8 bolt from the hardware store. If you have a vise and a drill you can drill the hole. Just file a small flat spot where you want the hole. Small drill bit for starter hole.

All-Thread is a very soft metal. Your spring looks very compressed. Perhaps the spring didn't have enough travel and the next thing to give is the all-thread. Looking at the parts manual, there is a hole in the bolt where a cotter pin is used as a spring stop. I think the spring needs some more travel space.

After you make or purchase the bolt, properly adjust the clutch brake assembly.

The bend in the bolt is down, from pushing, not pulling.

Right, but the only force that pushes IN like that is the clutch return springs and the clutch plate springs themselves. I can easily push the clutch by hand, but I can’t bend a bolt like that? I did have the clutch adjusted properly with the fingers at 0.90 from the TOB and the brake pucks at .010” from the clutch brake actuator. But I think I got that issue figured out. New buttons will fix this problem. They were just so short that the double nutting on the bolt caused the bending, I think. HamiltonBob’s is already on the case... I ordered them up last night.

Is the clutch flywheel loose on the transmission input shaft? If so, it will wobble and create some of these symptoms
I have seen the brake pucks completely worn out but not causing any bent bolts.
