Parking brake handle for dual brake 185

Postby JR Scout » Mon Aug 12, 2019 2:56 pm

I'm trying to replace the broken-off parking brake handle/lever (by your right foot, it has notches that engage a tab welded to the frame to lock the pedals down). Question is- How do I get the remains of the old handle out of the way? There is a pin that seems to be sort of like a large rivet that runs through the bottom of the handle into a hole in the frame, with no obvious way to get it out besides drilling.

That lever, called a stop ratchet in the parts book, is held to the pedal with a 1/4" diameter rivet.

I would probably grind off one side of the rivet and then drive out the remainder.
I have an excuse. CRS.

This might answer some of your questions after you get it apart.

Guess grinding would be way easier than drilling. Thanks.

Are you talking about the lever that joins the two brake pedals together? (Fastener on the right pedal)

No, it is the piece that holds the brake pedal(s) in the down position- sort of a poor man's parking brake. The thread referenced above by Duner describes it.

The gator tooth level that engages the brake pedal that holds it down.

To replace it the rivet must be drilled out and replaced by a bolt. You could get a shoulder bolt with flat washers and lock washer with a locking nut. You put the head of the shoulder bolt on the lever and adjust the play by installing flatwashers inside the frame. Then snug up the lockwasher/nut till the desired friction is obtained.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
