Shifter pops out of 1+3

Postby Bomar » Thu Aug 15, 2019 7:58 pm

Hey all. Back for some advice with my shifter. It will run perfect in reverse and 2nd but will pop out when I'm 1st or 3rd. I bought this tractor from the field where it broke down. The ball on the end of the shifter had broken off and the previous owner just left it in the field(for 3 years). I couldn't afford a new/used shifter at the time so i welded the ball back on. It has worked like this since i fixed it. I almost always cut in 2nd so it hasn't been an issue.

I would like to fix the problem so i am going to replace the shifter. HERE'S my question. Could this be caused only because my weld might not be perfect or could it be the detents for the 1st and 3rd gears. I thought i read that one detent ball works 1st and 3rd?

As usual, Thanks for any help!

Check the shifter forks for looseness or a break.

If the ball was welded on with a bias toward the rear, that would cause the behavior you are seeing. You can check this while you have the transmission cover off by manually sliding the 1st/Reverse rod into both gears. It should snap into place at each position (as well as neutral). The same should be true of the 2nd/3rd rod.

Slide both back to neutral, reinstall your shifter cover using only two or three bolts. Put the transmission into 1st gear. Carefully remove the cover and observe the 1st gear. Is it aligned with the gear below, or is there some longitudinal offset? Manually push the shifter rod and see if it moves a bit further before snapping into place. This will tell you a lot. Do the same with the 2nd/3rd rod. If both have additional travel before popping into place, your ball is off.

Also observe the wear of the gears. If the gears are too worn that will also cause it to pop out.

Bomar, one detent is for 1st. and reverse, the other 2nd. and 3rd. I'm going with the ball being welded on a little off. You can check it out as Jim suggested above. Yes, check for loose forks but your problem would be 2 loose forks.

Does the shifter bump against the seat in 1st and 3rd? Sometimes a replacement seat gets in the way of the shifter fully engaging the detent and when you hit a bump and the seat bounces a little, it will push the shifter out of gear.
Sounds silly ,but I've found a lot of tractors doing this.

My seat isn't original and i could see exactly what you're saying, but sadly that's not my problem. I wish it was that silly

Mine would pop out of first when going down a hill (had a few excited rides), but it was hitting the sheetmetal just a little when I put it in gear. I also discovered that the crossmember on the front of the transmission was cracked and the bolts were loose, causing it to move a little in the frame under load. Fixed both of those issues and never had it pop out again.
