I suspect it was for the belt to go to another implement behind. I ran my 154 without a belt guard. Sometimes my sweetie would mow and she liked a sweater. Once it became hot, she would drape the sweater over the seat. The spinning pulley was an inch away from pulling that sweater and her off the seat. I sprinted faster than ever, to remove the sweater and it became hot.

Belt guards are really important with these , especially if you have long hair too.

Ok never thought of that. After I posted this, I was wondering if they were clearance holes for the 3point hitch or something. I don’t or never seen the 3point hitch
