154 pto?

Postby brian kov » Sun Sep 02, 2007 6:17 pm

can the pto become locked on , i think this may be my problem because when i bypass the solenoid it will crank but the pto also spins , the 154 has a pto safety switch and i guess if the pto is engaged it will not let it start . any 1 have any ideas as to why the pto would become locked on . :?

Brian, been a while since I looked at a 154, but are you sure the pto lever is in the neutral position?
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

On the int154 the clutch pedal needs to be all the way down just like on the cub cadets so it will start up and run. On the PTO up is on and down is off it should stay in place when you pull it up. You may have to look into the PTO area to see whats wrong with it. To me I think there are detents that hold it in position it feels like it thats just my thoughts.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

there may be detents i am not sure , i guess the easiest way to look at that is remove the left fender ,some one already disconnected the clutch safety with a loop of wire .and the wires that are supposed to run to the pto safety cut out switch well only 1 of the 2 are there , so that is probably another problem . the pto is deffinately engaged and the linkage is on the appropriate locationfor the lever .it doesnt say any thing in the it shop manual

I think you need to get some sheet metal off so you can get a good look at the PTO. The PTO on a 154 is belt driven off the engine flywheel, to a shaft that runs back the left side of the tractor to the PTO clutch pac, and then the short PTO shaft that you see out the back of the tractor. The clutch pac and short shaft are known problems (and very pricey to repair) on the 154. From the way you talk, it is possible someone has done some rigging because of a bad PTO clutch and has it "hard wired", so to speak, to use the PTO, so it is on anytime the engine is running.

i pulled the wheel and left fender off and a lot of grease caked grass was all packed around it , cleaned all that away and pulled the pto handle up and it locked ,so it does actually lock on , but wander why it spun when it was "off" ,also i found out it has no pto safety switch ,i thought the late model 154 was supposed to have one , i guess mine is not late enough 1972 .atleast i dont see one .

i think the pto is fine ,what i saw spinning was the shaft that goes through the tunnel ,i was not aware that that spins continuosly , so hopefully the solenoid will do it ,i had to come up for a minute for some ibuprofin after weaseling the old solenoid out throught the bottom instaed of through the dash
