1973 cub loboy engine help

Postby JGtools » Sun Oct 05, 2008 3:45 pm

bought what i believe to be a 1973 cub lowboy according to serial #'s and model identification. has A c-60 engine that runs and starts great, but soon as engine warms up a bit, or is worked a bit hard,it will smoke a bit from oil breather cap, and seem to me that the engine lacks power. What should i do to correct this situation?? also after engine is warmed up i notice it shifts into gears harder? I suspect a clutch issue?? any help for new cub owner will be appreciated. I payed a $ 1000.00 and i understanded that the tractor would not be perfect as owner stated he had no time to fix it up..so he sold it cheap. is a 1000 ok or to much...? thanks, Jim

Let the tractor sit a day or two and then open the oil pan drain and see if there is any water in the bottom of the pan. Condensation will build up after a while and what you may be seeing is water vapor escaping after the motor heats up. Run some seafoam through the gas and run it to see if the 'smoke' goes away. May have set up a while and need to be worked. If the proplem persists, check the valve settings and do a compression check.
Your clutch sounds like the transmission flywheel brake is worn and out of adjustment. Check the gap and inspect for wear on the pads. You may be able to adjust the threaded rod above the clutch to stop the flywheel from spinning and get it into gear easier. Gap setting is .010
Hope this helps.

In addition to putting Seafoam in the gasoline, put some in the crankcase, too. Use the recommended amounts for both as shown on the label. Leave the Seafoam in the crankcase until your next regularly scheduled oil and filter change. If you have not changed the oil and filter since buying the Lo-Boy, change them now and add the Seafoam. You may have to repeat this sequence several times to see any results. If the rings are badly worn, you may not see any results at all, but it's worth trying.

Remove the lower water manifold and flush the block and bolster.
I have an excuse. CRS.
