184 slips out of reverse

Postby outdoors4evr » Thu Dec 18, 2008 12:39 pm

My 184 slips out of reverse when I am pushing snow (backwards with a rear blade).
This only occurs when I am pushing a heavy load and only in reverse (never a forward gear)
I do have a creeper, but this is not the problem. The creeper always stays in gear. It is the main shifter that goes to neutral.

Could this be a worn shifter fork? Any ideas?

A bent or broken shifter fork may be keeping you from getting reverse gear fully engaged. I'd start by inspecting the shifter forks and the amount of engagement you are getting in reverse. Then check for gear wear to see if partial engagement has occured long enough to cause wear on the edges of the teeth.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Mine does it in forward gears, could it be for the same reason?

Yep! It doesn't rule out worn gears but edge wear on gears is usually contributed to incomplete engagement so hopefully you will be able to verify the shifter forks and correct the problem before the gears are too far gone.

It could also be a loose fork too. I have opened up a few tranny's and found the 1st/rev fork welded already so it can't come loose. I figure its a common thing to happen in this tranny. If your gear is worn out i would weld the fork too while its opened up. They put two tac welds on both sides infront of the bolt. You will see two gaps were the bolt clamps that are open. This is were the two tacs go after the bolt is tightened.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
