Serial Number Confusion

Last night I went out to check the serial number on my 154. At night with a flashlight I thought that the S/N was 620032. A check of Rudi's production number list showed that the last tractor built was 52339 so, obviously my number was wrong. This morning I grabbed a soapstone for another look at the S/N. after a lot of scrubbing and rubbing it now looks like the S/N is 020032. Did IH start the S/N with a 0?

You are likely looking at the model number rather than the serial number. The serial numbers for 154s started with 7505 and ended with 36676. The serial number tag is riveted to the top of the fram on the front left, just under the exhaust.

Was the tractor serial number stamped, or just painted on? I have the tag, but no engraving, just a few specks of paint left. I can read the engine serial number.....would that be an adequate substitute for a new gas cap?

Yep that's where I got the number from. The tag is pretty rough with most of the paint gone. Using the soapstone I was able to find the number 020032 stamped into the tag. So, is this the serial number or a model number?

I'm not sure if the numbers started with a zero or not but 20032 would make it a 1970 as indicated in the serial numbers chart? A database of cub identification numbers is available somewhere on this site.

The most accurate and complete list of serial numbers is courtesy of Jim Becker at CubFAQ's #1 - Para 13.

All others are not exactly...

YTMag wrote:Year ....Starting Serial Number
1968 .......3505
1969 .......3773
1970 .......15502
1971 .......20332
1972 .......23343
1973 .......27538
1974 .......31766
The Serial Number is located on the left side of the clutch or transmission housing

I don't know about anyone else, but I never bother with any other list except the CubFAQ's. There is a reason the best and most accurate info is available here.. :D

All of the official IH production information that's in the Cub database was provided to me by Jim Becker. Of course, I only have info on the offset Cubs in there currently. Obviously I want to remedy that. In the next release, I will include the production information as well as any data from your number-series tractor(s). :D

All:

I just want to clarify a few things. Back in 2003 when I started setting up the Cub Manual Server, there was not a whole heck of a lot of information out there, and I really did not know a whole lot either. Some days :big give up: I still don't :big smile:. So I was happy as a pig in pooh whenever I found some reasonably good stuff or what appeared to me at the time to be good information. I also would honour requests from other sites to link, and to share information.

Since that time, I have learned a lot, the server has grown immensely, and I have sometimes forgotten to check some of the links to clarify or remind myself where those links go to. Unfortunately, one of those links is to the YT Mag Serial Number List.. in this case.. for the Numbered Cubs. The list at YT Mag seems to be out of sync with other information sources.

I have to thank Harold for reminding me about the link.. I forgot that it was still on the server. So, as soon as the server is back up again, I will be removing links to pages that are not accurate. I do not want to have wrong information being referenced from links on the server. I do apologize and will correct it asap.

Also, on the server there is links to Trent's Databases and other Production Information. These are updated as I get the infor from Trent and the other's. This databases I trust as they have been compiled by and from members of this site.. so the info is correct as can be.

Well I just bought a cub lo-boy 154 with a woods 59 mower. It's in real decent condition and I plan to pick it up next weekend. I will post pictures then. The serial number on the left front frame tag is 032693. This would seem to indicate at least some of these cubs have preceding zeros in front of the number. It has a three speed transmission with high and low range. It also has a 3 point hitch. I suppose it's a 1974.

edit: There is a difference between the two lists. YTMag uses the first serila number in the production run for that year. ATIS uses start and finish. The second difference we can see if we look at the first two entries in the YTMag Serial List. It is simply the starting number which is off. In 1968 it is off by 4000 and in 1969 it is off by about 4500. Not sure why, could simply be a transcription error. I apologize for the continuing confusion..
