front crank oil seal on 154 cub

Postby JGtools » Wed Feb 10, 2010 8:50 pm

I will be replacing the front crank oil seal on the 154 lo boy (when I get that far) I have not removed old seal from timing cover, looking at the cover it looks like I should be able to knock it out from the inside carefully, what will be the tricks, when I install the new oil seal? thanks , Jim

There is no real trick to replacing the seal - it just taps out and taps in - once you get the front cover removed. The real trick is removing the pulley off of the front of the crankshaft. See the attached two links from the 'cub book of knowledge' attached below;

The front pulley on the numbered series is a little different - but the idea is the same. NJDale

Thanks, I have the cover off, and replaced the seal today. I'm waiting for my crank to get back from machine shop, then I will start assembling the engine. Thanks for the links, I did make a pulley puller out of angle iron, flat stock, and a 1/2 x 12 " threaded rod, worked great, but would not last long for multiple uses, I will build a better one when I have time. Thanks for your input and time,Jim
