How do I know if I need to replace the clutch brakes? ( 2- round plastic like brakes) they install in the retainer that bolts to the trans case. I assume the brakes wear, and need replacing/ One side of the brakes appear flat, and has a wood like grain sticker on it>>? also is there a right and wrong way to insert the brakes into the retainer? thanks for the help Jim

These (404642R1) should look like a pool cue stick tip. The "woodgrain tip" should face/contact the steel flywheel.

Ken, that would be the flat side makes contact with flywheel. The rounded part faces retainer. thanks,Jim

Usually the way to tell if you have a problem is the clutch brake doesn't stop the clutch and you "grind them till you find them". The usuall problem is too much wear in the linkage system, causing continual adjustment. Tighten up the linkage with new bushings(welded in) and the adjustment will be few again.

Dave, do you have any pictures of the linkage fix? Not sure I understand. I know the bolt that connects to the brake bracket, has adjustment ,By turning in or out, not sure what bushings you are talking about, thanks Jim

Check all the moving joints between the foot pedal back to the point the clutch brake starts to engage. Any wear throughout the system(like the pivot points where pins wear against holes in the brackets), this lash adds up through the linkage and often time is greater than what is available in the adjustment back at the brake. This is why on older units people complain of constantly having to adjust. I have seen some clever adaptations where the brake can be applied by hand directly on the clutch brake itself. These are quite effective, but do require one hand to "hand brake" and use of your other hand to select the next gear.

Thanks Dave. I was wondering why Ih did not have a true brake pad, kind of like the old hand clutch days, and belt pulley brakes, that used a brake lining to stop the pulley? I will check the linkages, and do my best. thanks again, Jim
