Thought about checking on this cub on craigslist as it is only about 45 minutes from me. Was wondering if transmission parts are available and affordable, Appreciate any info or opinions on this. Thanks Gordy

Hi Gordy, down here in NWOhio, parts are readily available. Most of your cadet 3 speed gears and all your F-cub, lo-boy cub gears will swap. The biggest pain is you have to completely remove the trans with finals. The finals have to come off in order to remove the back ring carrier, in order to remove the bottom pinion, in order to swap the matching gears in the bottom of the case. Not a hard job, just time consuming. Here's the gears and what you'll be swapping(http://www.tm-tractor.com/gtr/locations_001.htm

This could be a real steal???? The 1st and rev fork could be loose or cracked. Mine was loose enough to jump out of gear. I took the tranny cover off and tightened up the fork and tac welded it so it can't come loose. I repaired the problem without removing the tranny. This fork problem is noted in all the cub cadets, 154 series and the fcub's were they used these tranny's.
On most of my tractor purchases while inspecting and cleaning the tractor i remove the tranny top cover to check the 1st/rev fork before doing any other work so i know up front the fork is ok. My point is i find most of them welded and fixed already.

I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I agree with Bill, that is a seemingly easy fix, and in an hour or two you could be back up and running. That tractor is a steal. It is nearly complete and even has the fiberglass nose. It is clean, straight, and has good tires and a good mower deck. If it was near me, I'd already be mowing with it!

As I looked at the ad, I too thought it may be an easy fork fix. But I thought otherwise when I got to the sentence " I pulled the top off the transmission and the sliding gear on the main output shaft that gives you 1st and reverse has no teeth left on it." Still possible the guy doesn't know what he is looking at, but presumably most people can tell the difference between a gear with teeth and a gear with none.

Re: International 154 Cub Lowboy W/60" Mower
My story is;
I went to look at a cub cadet 104 with a 38" mower and a 54" snowplow from what tractor i'm not sure yet. The guy was upset that everyone wanted a running mower for $150. The engine was so called stuck. He was very firm on the $150 price plus i only needed a snowplow.
When i got home and started to play with it i noticed the fan belts were rusted to the pullies thus stuck engine. I removed the belts and found the engine would turn over. I removed the head and the cylinder bore looked like new. The 104 was covered in rust and was probably a few years old when the gas went bad so it was parked outside to rust. I free'd up one stuck exhaust valve and changed the carb since it was gummed up really bad. It started right up and runs awesome. Except for the rust i have a brand new running 104. It was a parts tractor.......now its one of the best in my fleet of cub cadets. When i went to just look at it, it spoke to me, its just one of those things we run into time to time.
My point is you never know what your going to get once you really look at it.
You can take the tranny out of the 154 in about 4 hours(going slow between coffee's) and all the gears and shafts can be found on ebay if the tranny is that bad. Since the average price on the 154's is around 3k to 3.5k you really can't lose plus its worth more in parts. I enjoy making them run again, well driving them too. BigBill
