While changing the rear seal in my 184, I dropped the oil pan. I was quite suprised to find about 1/4" of old oil, water (condensate), and sludge in the bottom of the pan. The drain is not at the lowest point of the pan so a springtime oil change does not allow all of the water to leave.
Has anyone relocated their oil drain? Are there any tricks to getting that goo out like changing the oil on the side of a steep hill? Do you just remove your oil pan every few years for a good cleaning?
Thanks,

Re: Oil Pan Drain
I guess dropping the pan is the best idea. Some folks recommend running kerosene through it for a couple of minutes. I'm not sure about that. I know farmers used to do it back in the 40's, 50's. And yes, I'm that old!. That would take care of the sludge. And yes, parking it on a slight grade would help the drainage. as far as retapping the pan, sounds easy enough if you found the correct low spot. I'd be sure and put a magnetic plug back in it though just to pick up crap. That's just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Oil Pan Drain
Please do not run the engine with kerosene in it for any amount of time. There is very little lubricating qualities in it and the engine bearings will be toast real quick.

Cecil is right. Guess I should have been more thorough on my response. I was in a hurry. I am not recommending using a kerosene flush. As I stated; some folks do, and some folks have. Not me.

Re: Oil Pan Drain
Because the plug is so high, whatever you put in your engine for lubrication probably will not leave your engine until you drop the pan and do a thorough cleaning. I guess that I'll be dropping the pan in a couple of years. (At which point I will probably weld a nut onto the bottom of the pan for a drain.
