update and another question???
Alright I took it apart and tinkered around. Fixed some of the slop in the clutch travel and added a spring. That has stopped the minor grinding but still no go. I did find another piece that might help some of you guys with more experience then me point me in the right direction. When I let off the clutch but still have pressure I get a bit of creep from the tractor in 1st and reverse. I didn't try 2nd or 3rd.
When I step on the clutch it stops spinning and when I let off it begins spinning but no movement. Any help is greatly appreciated. I just hate to spend a bunch on extra parts that I might or might not need.
thanks, Ryan

Re: update and another question???
There is a bolt that connects the drive shaft to the flywheel. Sometimes it gets loose and falls out, or breaks and falls out.
Take either of the two metal side panels off, under the dashboard, and look for the driveshaft. There should be a roughly 3" long 3/8" thick bolt through a hole in the flange, and through a hole in the driveshaft.
It might even be a shear bolt, that would be designed to break under severe load. If it ain't there, you ain't movin'.
Sorry that I don't know the exact names of the parts.

Re: update and another question???
If you look closely at the bottom center of the picture, you can see the long thru-bolt just to the right of the four hub attaching bolts.
hope that this helps, NJDale

Re: update and another question???
Nope, the bolt is there. I believe I have narrowed it down to the pressure plate. Thanks guys being able to cross off the potential problems has strengthened my confidence in knowing what the problem might be

Hey Duff,
If the pressure plate is not the problem, make sure that bolt we spoke of is not just stuck in there and sheared off on the inside..effectively looking like it is installed but not doing it's job. Is the shaft turning aft of that bolt? Just a thought..

Re: update and another question???
Yea the drive shaft spins up to the clutch. When I push on the clutch it will stop spinning.

Nope no loud pops. I am praying for the pressure plate and throwout bearing only. Trust me!

Re: update and another question???
It should stop spinning when you press the clutch pedal. That's the pucks stopping the spinning so you can shift gears. Can you actually see the clutch disk engage and disengage when you push in the clutch pedal? It don't move much back and forth but I can surely see mine when it does. That would be an indicator of the pressure plate working or not. Good luck.

Re: update and another question???
Yes I can see "stuff" moving when I move the pedal but I don't have enough knowledge to know what stuff should be moving.
I attempted to take off the clutch today following the repair manual the bolt on the flywheel and drive shaft came out easy but I could not slide the shaft forward. I went ahead and took off the rest up to the 6 bolts on the presure plate. Not sure if this indicates problems but when taking the bolts off the pressure plate the plate would spin separate of everything. Once I get the drive shaft loose I will inspect everything and go from there. I was suprised that everything as fairly easy to take apart and will be easy to put back together except for the drive shaft I am afraid. Any advice out there on that?
Thanks for the help so far. I am sure I will need plenty more soon.

Re: update and another question???
I don't recall exactly, but don't it tell you to unbolt the engine and slide it forward a little in order to remove the pressure plate/clutch?

Re: update and another question???
Duff,
If you sand any rust from the front of the driveshaft by the hub, you MAY be able to slide the driveshaft far enough forward to get your pressure plate, then clutch off.
If not, sliding the engine forward is easier than it sounds.
Remove hood,
Remove front gas tank bolt and set the front tab of the tank on top of the bolt (just lift up the front, do not remove),
Remove the 2 5/8" bolts in the firewall,
Remove the 4 bolts from the underside of the steering support that go into the front motor mounts,
Remove the 4 rear bolts that hold the rear of the enginr to the frame,
Slide the motor forward and inch or so, using a wedge between the rear of the engine and the farme .
Should take 1/2 hour or so.
Good Luck!
