154 lowboy PTO continously engaged

Some one HELP! I have the above tractor and the PTO pully spins and is engaged even when the engagement lever is not . Any suggestions what the problem might be and the fix?

Read my 185 pto clutch thread just below this one and it will fill you in as what to do!---Start with a $260. rebuild kit or go for a new unit for $ 1,600. from IH ---But be aware that the kit does not have everything that you may need!---At any rate take the pto unit off and take it apart and see whats in there,--then maybe some one can help you as to what to do in putting it back together!
Mine was a mess and just got it running yesterday and mowed with it today, and it does work,--I dont have a lever on mine,--heck I dont even have the fenders on it!!!---I needed to mow!!!--and mow I did!
Let us know what you find in there after you get it apart! thanks: sonny

Thanks for the info Sonny. I just couldn't why it suddenly would drive the mower deck with the engagement lever in the off position. The pully spins freely ( counterclockwise ) with the engine off and when I engage the lever , with the engine still off , it locks as if ready to drive the mower belt . It was working fine the last time I mowed with it. Again thanks for your expertise.

You may only need to adjust yours!---Another thing to check is the internal pilot bearing in the shaft itself!---it may have gone out! thanks; sonny

Again , thanks for the information . I,m going to have to find a manual with that proceedure. This is my first "154"and am learning as I go. It's beginning to be a little costly as I paid a dealer for an entire new clutch assembly a couple of years ago. It runs fine and looks great but with the economy the way it is , it's tough!

Before spending anything on a rebuild kit you may just want to open yours and see what is causing the problem. Likely do not need a rebuild kit. Either the two small roller bearings, pilot bearing, are grabbing or the larger bearings on the actuator disc.

Its either the inside roller bearing between the two shafts went south and the needles are free to lock it up(binding). Or the sleeve on the shaft that engages the pto clutch is stuck/frozen up. Have you greased it lately? My replacement PTO had the press in grease fitting missing so i put a new one in it and greasing it free'd up the pto engagement a lot. My first 154 is kicking my butt now but there's nothing on the planet that can mow like it for just $800 i'm spoiled now. My 154 will do the finish mowing while my fcub will do the brush hogging(rear kub klipper). While my cub cadets will trim. But some of these machines were run hard and never had any maintenance done plus there 40 plus years old too.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Trust me i know but the repairs will be the same withy any older machine. I just about have a complete 154 on the shelf right now in parts. If i'm going to run them i better have the parts to fix them. I also have cub cadet and fcub in parts too.
