184 Tune Up Specs - RUNNING AWFUL & NO POWER

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Sun Nov 14, 2010 1:26 pm

Would anyone happen to know the tune up specs for an 1977 IH 184 Loboy tractor. I have the Farmall Cub service manual, but thought the specs might be a little different on this particular version. Just wanted to double check because I am having so much trouble with engine power.

I am looking for the Spark Plug Gap, the Points Gap, etc. Part Numbers for the distributor internals, plugs, and so forth would be nice too if it isn't too much to ask. I usually shop at NAPA, so I'm sure they'll have what I need. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP THUS FAR AS WELL!!!
Regards,
Chase

Here's what Rudi has on the server, I didn't look to see if your specific questions are answered there: http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Number ... index.html

Bob

Edit: I clicked on the 154 when I went to copy, here's the link for the 184 if you didn't already find it: http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Number ... index.html

Thanks so much for the link. That is some real handy info about the 184. It did help me as far as telling me the gap spacing for the points and the spark plugs. However, I am still in need of the part numbers (NAPA preferrably) for the tune-up parts I need to buy. The plugs, points, condensor, rotor, distributor cap, etc.

Matt,
G-Mail sent with an Excel file (hope that you have Excel) for all the maintenance parts for a 184 with cross references to NAPA, Wix, etc.
Good Luck, NJDale

Really!? WOW, thank you soooo much. Yea, I have Excel. I write my own spreadsheets for keeping up with my ever-so-changing inventory as well as some spreadsheets to record everything I do to the tractors. Does the spreadsheet include parts for the regular Farmall Cub tractors?? That is what I mostly have (14 and counting).

Matt,
The Pertronix Electronic Ignition system is the best power improver for the buck.
It totally eliminates the points and condenser and will give a normally good running engine at least 1 more horsepower. The only thing to watch is that you can not run solid core copper ignition wires.

Pertronix Ignitor Part # 1441.

w.helmarparts.com $79.00 plus ship; also available many places - check the web.

Hope that this helps you, NJDale

No sorry, the Excel spread sheet was made expressly for the 184 that my son has & his 3160A mower deck.

NJDale - I just bought a 184 a few days ago and I'm having a similar problem...starts and idles great, but push the throttle forward and it barely increases in RPM. If you start trying to mow with it, it bogs down and will stall in grass that is not very tall at all. I want to go through and tune it up and was hoping to get the parts locally as I would like to get it going quickly. Could you send me the spreadsheet you mentioned with the NAPA part numbers? I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks
