I had some time to do a little on the tractor and really want to hear this thing run. My question is one that has been asked before I am sure but I did not get the answer doing a search. I really don't want brand but more weight of oil to use. I believe the manual says 30wt. But oil has changed a lot since the manual was written. Any problems using a good multi weight oil in a c60 engine? Since I really don't know the maintenance history of the tractor, I want to Change the oil then start it up and run for a short time. Then change the oil again to flush out any junk in the motor from sitting.

Use whatever you have - the cheaper the better...if it is just for a flush out / rinse...

A multi-grade oil will be fine.
10w30 will work fine. The 154 transmission requires Hy Tran or equiv. since it's the sump for the hyd. system.
Remember for heavy use in the hot weather its 30wt motor oil. For just mowing i been using the mobil delvac 15/40wt with no problems or usage of oil. For the winter in cold weather 10/30 will do. For very cold weather (0 and below) a 5/30 is better. Using a heavy wt oil in cold weather it takes too long for the bearings to get oil pressure. This even takes more time for the rods and pistons to get oil too.
Food for knowledge; On my cub cadets when mowing i been running the 10/40 wt oil. I been adding oil often too when running it in the warmer weather. I changed the oil to 30wt and the oil consumption stopped completely. So from now on if i'm running a lighter oil weight and i see i'm adding more oil to the crankcase i need to go higher in oil weight.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
The SHORT one is about ten inches. It is cold and raining so I am less motivated to measure the long one out in the barn. . 13-14 inches?

Mine is under wraps until spring, (or if it warms up any). Proportion-wise mine looks like the long/correct one. 4 qts puts it just a smidgin over add.
Maybe mine is the "new design" SPLASH lubrication version . . .
Got bigger fish to fry with the hydraulic pump for now.
I've seen some oil filler tubes installed the wrong way. The bend should turn the tube up to a more vertical orientation. If it turns out, it could have a measurable effect on the reading.
